Very interesting quote
« on: September 29, 2010, 12:45:45 pm »
This is a last line quote from a major manufacturer of Audio gear that does not want to warranty any older equipment repairs after the product is 10 years old.
They go on and on about parts availability and wear and tear, etc, just to end with this:

"Strangely enough, we are quite able to maintain almost all really old tube amps because the working parts are still available and these amps were manufactured in a totally different method of assembly which as it turns out will last nearly forever."

Priceless!!!

Strangely enough, when things were built to last, they did!
I guess this is an admission they won't be using this "totally different method of assembly" on any new product they build.

WOW!

WOWEE WOW!

I read that and spent 20 minutes reminiscing ( to myself) about how a man could fix things with half a brain a screwdriver and a crescent wrench

When I tell people about my tube amp building, many people are astonded that tubes are still being used in guitar amps and high end audio equipment. Most people think tubes went away in the 70's much less P to P/ tubes. We live it evey day but a lot a folks haven't got a clue about it.
On the right track now<><

I have stopped being surprised at the guitar player who spends $3,000 on the latest boutique amplifier, and plugs in his Mexican Stratocaster strung with light gauge strings through a Big Muff Pi fuzz pedal.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planned_obsolescence

Planned obsolescence is the name of the game in today's market (Apple is a prime example).

I have refused to participate in the "game"....I use everything I own as long as I can.
I wear clothes until they are thread-bare or the holes start to expose parts of my body no one should see.
I buy used cars that others think are beyond repair/useless, & drive them until they absolutely cannot be repaired anymore.
For the cost of 1x monthly payment on a new car, I can usually maintain my old beater(s) for several years. (then I usually get my $ back when I take them to the local scrap metal establishment to be crushed & sent to China  )

Same basic principle applies to my amps, but not so much because of cost factors. More because instead of going out & buying the newest fad tone, I can just build an amp (or re-build an existing amp) & make it sound any way I wish.

Plus, it's just plain fun!

I remember when I was a teenager I was able to tune a car engine. Just change the points and plugs and condenser, clean the carb and use a timing light pretty much. Now I don't even want to open the hood(not that I can anymore).

I always thought to myself the end of a society comes when the average person cannot fix what is being built. Years ago you could fix your house or even build one yourself, that is changing with green technology, forget about cars and TV sets. Once everything is made to be used and thrown away we just will drown in a sea of left over junk and that's what's happening. I live near the biggest land fill in the world on Staten Island, they HAD to close it. We have some of the biggest cancer clusters here.

In all honesty my big screen TV does not look any better then some of the old regular ones I had years ago. It's a false sense of vision as is 3D, in studies it has shown to actually change the way your brain perceives things. In other words such a sharp picture is unnatural for the human brain to see/process.

Politically I'm not one to go back to the 1950s but technology wise better is not always better. The guitar was designed to emulate different acoustic instruments through electronics. The blues guitar is mostly trying to sound like a saxophone, that's what Freddie King said.

The new generation has no idea how to fix anything anymore. As soon as their I-Pods and I-phones are out they are obsolete.
And then there's the modeling tube amps like Line 6. Always broken down and sound like absolute crap.
The garbage pile in the oceans? We are in trouble people!
