D_mble build into TOS
« on: September 29, 2010, 02:06:28 pm »
Hello all !

This is my first post here. I red of the TOS at ampgarage and loved the clips of the tubenit and Geezers amps. I changed my 50w dumble preamp into Tweed over drive special and am enjoying the result very much. I built it first with Svetlana EF86 (no 5879's where I live). Today I got the 5879's I ordered and rewired the socket. The sound is eaven better to me now. 5879 seems to give a meatier, little softer sound. EF86 is tighter but not what I was after. The D style power amp is quite stiff - not breaking almost at all. I might try something other for the poweramp section. The amp has built in dumbleator and two relays controlled by footswitch (have to decide for what purpose is the other relay going to be).

I did two dry clips with EF86 and 5879 with same settings on both recordings. The playing comes from Boss loop pedal so they are identical. Everything else is the same but the tubes (and socket wiring). The EF86 has more gain and the clip was louder so I normalized both clips to have same volume. Not big difference but hearable for sure. I like the playing feel of the 5879 also more.

The EF86:http://soundclick.com/share?songid=9701368
The 5879http://soundclick.com/share?songid=9701371

Big Thanks for tubenit and Geezer for the great amp design !

Hey Mat,

Thanks for the post & sharing soundclips!

I'd be happy with either the EF86 or 5879 tone, but tend to like the softer warmer tone of the 5879 slightly more.

The sound clip of the song is FABULOUS!  What incredible playing and tone you've got there! I loved it. You made it sound very very touch sensitive and the blooming effect is super nice.  Wished you were local so I could hear you play live.

Glad you're enjoying the build and the tone you are getting.

I wish'd I had 1/10th of your playing ability cause I'd be twice as good as I currently am.
  :icon_thumleft:

IF you are OK with it, I'd like to link this great soundclip to the SCH file on the Tweed Overdrive Special?

with respect, Tubenit

Glad you're enjoying the amp! I know I really LOVE mine!!  :color:

The clips sound great......definately the same type tone I'm getting (I've since done more tweaks, will post them soon   )

have to decide for what purpose is the other relay going to be

Try a larger cap paralleled across the 5879 cathode cap (10uf or even 25uf)....it gives a nice boost & added "smoothness" to the OD. I have that as a footswitchable option on mine now, & use it all the time!

Geezer

ps....I have a Kleinulator buffered loop ordered & will post some updated clips when I have time to work it into the mix.

Thanks Tubenit for Your nice words. Actually the name of the funk clip comes from the flu I have. Lots of sloppines on the clip  Yes, You can link the clip but I hope to post something better in near future. Btw. I bet this amp sounds gorgeous when playing slide !

Thanks Geezer, the amp is super touch sensitive. Might be nice to get it little looser, but I thing I have to try another type power amp section to get there. Maybe the VVR ? Love to hear of the tweaks !

Thanks for the tip, I'll try that first thing tomorrow !

I still use the jfet based kleinulator I built few years ago with one of my other D-build (nonHRM+1 tube reverb). Can't wait for the clips ! Really good playing on the earlier clips.

Geezer,

Thanks for mentioning the 10uf and 25uf paralleled cathode caps. I used a 6.8uf on the 5879 with the  T-Lite 5879 OD build but forgot that I did that & haven't tried anything but a 2.2uf on the TOS.

I'll give that tweak a try also and report what I find.

MAN O LIVE!

I got to get back and finish that TOS build of mine.

This amp sound better each time I hear it.

What kind of guitar are you playing?

My version of the TOS has a rather stiff output section too. I feel that is a very good thing in this amp.

The clean channel is so wicked clean and so thick with under tones and harmonics using that paralleled tube. and the OD, well damn thats why  Jeff and Da Geezer designed it.

All of that is in the PA section, and a stiff power section (IMHO) is needed so as not to color what was so cleverly designed.

OH Super Clip! it may have captured that TOS sound best so far.

Thanks Ray for Your kind words. I'm playing a Bigsby installed Gibson ES339 on the clip. You are right, TOS sounds great with clean power amp. It is the looser playing feel that I'm after, so I was thinking if the power section would sag a little bit easier, the playing feel might be little more forgiving for the player

I use a GZ34 in both of mine instead of solid state rectification.

Tubenit, I don't think my PT could handle another tube. This amp is kind of a 'test lab'-amp for me. I'm going to build another one from the scratch with different power section than dumble.

WOW !!!!!         I highly recommend good headphones for this tune. It's got alot of nuances to the playing going on.

What a totally cool vibe that has to it!  Unbelievably remarkable tone and playing.  Man, that has a great groove to it.  Loved it.

Keep em coming ........... I'll look forward to any more sound clips you're willing to share.

Thanks, Tubenit

The surprise ending was killer!  Was that an acoustic or electric sneeze.

At the end of the soundclip, someone in the background sneezes. I was trying to make a joke. Like acoustic or electric guitar but a sneeze instead. Wasn't a very good joke.   I listened to the soundclip on headphones and it pretty easy to hear.

OK Mat,

Now please explain why you think your playing is so sloppy and need forgiveness from an amp?

That was you laying down your licks was it not? Beautiful!

That was as TIGHT of playing as I have ever heard.

It also showcases the extreme versatility of the TOS preamp section. It's not just a OD monster, It can be a VERY refined, high definition studio amp as well! The amp could have been named Jekyll and Hyde the way it behaves.

Did you do any post production on that last clip? I could hear a bit of delay or reverb, a pedal maybe?

Hi Ray,

First, thank You very much for Your kind words.

I've been long time fan of dumble style amps where every little nuances gets heard but ocassionally I like to put weight on the right hand and that does not work so good at least not on my build with D-power section. After hearing the Red Plate amps I have been digging that sound a lot. Henrys Tweedyverb and Blackverb amps are really cool sounding tone boxes. Tubenits and Geezers TOS amps are IMO to that direction.

There are 3 guitars on the 38,5 track. One TOS clean channel (+tremolo pedal later on) and one TOS clean channel + vibe pedal and one TOS OD channel with a dealy pedal on the effect loop. I doubled the OD track and added software reverb on both of them on Reaper multitrack recording software.
