Substitute 6V6s for 6L6s?
« on: October 11, 2010, 08:15:02 pm »
Are there any problems with using 2 6V6s in a 2-6L6 amp? I know there will be an OT impedance mismatch but I run the 6L6s in triode mode all the time, & it sounds fine.

Cathode biased or fixed bias?  If fixed bias, you'll need to rebias.   And ...... What is the voltage on the plates?

Take a look at the voltage rating for JJ 6V6's.

With respect, Tubenit

It's cathode biased, @30v on the cathode, plate voltage is @ 400 to ground which I believe makes the functional plate voltage @370. Either way I think the 6V6 can handle the plate voltage. And I guess I did mean "would they work, after changing the bias resistor", which sort of goes without saying.

NOS tubes may be sketchey but newer types should be fine.

Thanks, I thought so but there's an ocean of things I don't know about these things.

The JJ 6V6S seems plenty stout and I have installed it in 6L6 amps with 2 speakers connected in series for a quieter sound.
