Speaker choices for an 18 Watt Stout
« on: October 22, 2010, 06:11:26 am »
Hi gang  - I'm just getting started with an 18 Watt Stout for my son's guitar (an HSS with a OLP Pettruci Sig humbucker, Wilkinson single mid, and GFS alnico Fat Body neck), and am pondering what speaker (s) to mate it too.  We've got a couple of old Cleveland 12" alnicos from an organ, one of which is currently being driven by my first amp build, a 5W Champ with a 6L6....it sounds pretty good to us, but we haven't been exposed to much of the "good stuff".  I'm planning on trying out one of the Clevelands but am also considering adding something like a WGS ET-65, Reaper, British Lead, Celestion G12H Anniversary, or an Eminence Governor or Wizard in a 2x12....can't spend big bucks one one though.  It's hard to tell what these really sound like from the online clips, but I'm liking most of the tones I can pick out.  As a reference to what we like, the sound clips here of Doug's 18 Watt Stout and the Tweed Overdrive Special definitely bring a smile!

Opinions, suggestions, favorites, comments, etc?

TIA!

The Stout sings very nicely with brit-style speakers. WGS speakers are excellent and very competitive price-wise.

Thanks FYL....the WGS line is the one I've been leaning towards most.  The price seems good and there have been several that I liked (based on the sound clips).

Scott - I generally don't like pointy guitars but your design is a delightful exception!  The headstock fits really well with the body design too.  Never would have thought of finishing the two halves of the body before assembly.

Thanks for sharing,

We have proven once again no plan survives contact with the enemy, or in this case, with the amp.
