PT/speaker question
« on: November 08, 2010, 04:02:11 pm »
I've got a bit of a quandary - I think I'm OK with what I want to do, but I wanted to check with all y'all.

My current setup for my amp (more or less a Stout, though it started life as a GDS 18watt kit, and uses their iron) includes a switch box to use the amp with either the internal speaker or my Leslie.  Basically, its a ABY box for the speaker out, but of course when I am using both speakers it also has to switch to the 4 ohm tap on the transformer (and of course, it needed power relays, but it is all remotely driven, and I'm about to get to the point where it can even be done with MIDI!).  It works great, and I love the sounds I get out of it!

The thing is, I want to move all my time based effects to after the PT, using the line level output from a Weber Mini-Mass (with the attenuator at max volume - I'm not looking to turn anything down, just get the line level input to drive delays and chorus and the like).  It that going to work?  More to the point, if I hang the Mini-Mass off of the 8 ohm output, will it still work when I switch to the 4 ohm output for driving both speakers, or might it fry something?

My semi-intuitive thought is that this no different from a negative feedback look (though not negative, but that's not really the point), and should work fine.  It might even work well to just put the Mini-Mass on the 16 ohm output, with the other two outputs being used as they are for the normal speaker and the Leslie.  As long as I don't start turning down the attenuator, I shouldn't hurt anything, right?  I'd rather not have to use a separate amp for the Leslie, particularly as that would mean building another amp, and carrying another amp around (and I'm already getting close to having 3-4 amps to carry just to make the noise I want to make!)  If I like what I end up with, I'll eventually probably just building the required voltage divider to get the line out directly from the amp, but I've got enough projects to be getting on with at the moment (rebuilding my entire guitar rig, for one!), so I don't really feel the need to add another project if the Mini-Mass I've already got will do the trick!

Weber's Mass is basically a coneless speaker - mass-loaded voice coil, spider, motor, etc. - plus some glue, used as an attenuator. It has a very real impedance, which will be reflected to the primary.

Adding a voltage divider and level pot is IMO an easier and safer solution.

It ALSO has a line level output that is separate from the voice coil.

If I really must do something, I probably build it in an external box - at least for now.  Its faster than opening up the amp!
