Need Motorola HS-701B schematic
« on: December 20, 2010, 04:55:26 pm »
I recently won another Motorola mono Hi-Fi record player console tube amp...  this one is a HS-701B which uses a 5Y3 rectifier, two 12AX7 tubes in the preamp/driver/inverter stage and a pair of 6BQ5 (EL84) for power tubes.  I believe that it came out of a SK-33 series Motorola console.  I'm guessing from the tube count that the circuit is or can be made to something similar to non-tremelo channel of the Marshall 18-watt amp, with the exception of the 5Y3 instead of an EZ81 rectifier.

I want to modify this amp for guitar use.  So far all I've done is crimp some spade connectors onto the speaker wires so I could plug a speaker onto it and soldered in a 1/4" jack in place of the RCA jack for the input.  Everything seems to work well, although as I expected beforehand volume is somewhat weak and it is totally clean up to max volume.  This is fairly similar to my experience with other Motorola Hi-Fi chassis.  I know I will remove the "loudness" circuit from the back of the volume pot -- that looks identical to the other Motorola chassis I have.  I think I've located the "feedback resistor" but I'm not absolutely sure on that one yet.  I'm hoping to get the schematic so I can determine for sure if I've found the feedback resistor.  I will try it with no feedback resistor (it doesn't look like the Marshall 18 watt circuit uses one), and if that isn't good I will try a few larger than stock values.  This is similar to what I've done with the other Motorola chassis I've got.

Unfortunately http://techpreservation.dyndns.org/schematics/Motorola.htm is down right now and they don't appear to have the HS-701B...  and when it was up last week I was searching all over for this one and wasn't able to locate it or another similar chassis.

Anyway, if anyone has a schematic for this thing, I'd greatly appreciate it if I could snag a copy.  If not I may end up having to buy a Sam's photofact or something.

It should not take long to trace it out, at least the basic stages.

How many OT secondary leads go to the amplifier instead of the speaker? That will be your NFB. A resistor is typical, but some amps used dedicated windings.

If you are just going to cut it up and hot-rod it into a Marshall, why do you care how Motorola did it? Gut the 9-pins and start wiring.

It would be a bit of work to trace out.  I'd probably rather wait to order a Sams photofact off eBay than do that.

Anyway, I am not sure I want to just build a Marshall clone, although that would certainly be an option.  With the other Motorolas although they are similar to a tweed Fender Deluxe I only made a few tweaks so they still have their own sound, albeit with a lot more gain than they did stock.  Kinda what I am going for is a "what if" Motorola had been in the guitar amp business in the late 1950s...  maybe what they would have built.

Oh...  edit to add that the actual console this came in was an HK-33M or HK-33B depending I think on the color -- I think M was for Mahogany (veneer) and I think B was for Beige maybe?
