crate vintage club 60 power transformer help
« on: January 18, 2011, 10:20:42 am »
I have a crate 6112 [ vintage club 60 ] that has a bad power transformer . Loud tech has discontinued the part and the only direct replacement I have found is a mercury magnetics at 185.00 . I have a schematic but it doesnt show any secondary voltages . Any help on a different replacement would be appreciated . its a S L M E 94-271-40 . secondary has 2 red / 2 orange/ 2 yellow / 1 green . it runs 2 el34 power tubes , 4 12ax7 and a 12au7 . thanks a bunch

Does the schematic show the B+ voltage? You should be able to back it out from there (divide by 1.4 and pick the closest thing). Or pick something from a similarly-tubed amp. $185 is way too much; I bet you could replace the amp for that or less (I let a VC50 head and 2x10 cabinet go last year for $200).

Make sure it's really a bad PT and not bad rectifier diodes first.

I think all the info you need is on that schematic is has voltages at test points shows 470 at anode so my guess its about 380 on the hi voltage the other is the heater and we know what that is last is the other set of windings and I am sure someone will tell us what that needs to be.

> $185 is way too much

It's not too much for that much special-spec iron with so little demand.

It may indeed be more than the amp is worth. Dunno.

What other choice do you have? Only the usual Fender/Marshall replacement irons.... anything else will be essentially the same price.

The best-match for the circuit is "Fender two-6L6 50W" or Marshall MPT50, $90-$110.

To that you must add a 24VCT 200mA transformer for the solid-state stuff.

That's a fair point/points. I've certainly overspent on replacement parts or gear just b/c it's something special for me for whatever sentimental/stupid reason(s). And MM is essentially offering a one-off (I can't imagine they have a shelf full of VC60 replacement transformers just sitting around...). I guess if it's worth $185 to the owner than MM is right on.
