Single Channel 5e3?
« on: February 19, 2011, 07:17:49 am »
Hello Everyone,

Ive been looking into the idea of a single channel 5e3 and have found a few posts here and there. One of the more detailed discussions I found was this http://music-electronics-forum.com/t9657/
The Soulkicker design Bruce from mission amps looks like it could be fun and im wondering if anyone here has done anything like that. If anyone is out there im looking to get an idea of what kind of tonal options can be had using this idea and what kind of values would be used to get them.

I'd also like to know if the typical 5e3 tone could still be reached using a two knob T/B tone stack.

Anyway any info that can be shared here would be great.

Cheers,

Neill

I built a single channel 5E3 a few years ago. It seemed like a good idea. It was a nice amp but most of the sound of a 5E3 comes from the interactive volumes. That's not to say it wasn't a great sounding amp. It just didn't do what I'd hoped. It's worth the extra bits to do both channels. It's a far more versatile amp.

Single channel and you have unused half of a tube... Just do the two channels. You don't really need the two inputs for each channel if you want to save some space.
The two knob tone control will sound different.  Tweed or Blackface different.

From what I've read about Bruce's Soulkicker he trys to maintain the 5e3 sound by having one half of the 12ay7 wired like the bright channel and switching the second half into the mix tuned differently. This to me sounds like you would have the normal bright channel and then a parallel input mixing together something like jumpering the two channels. If you check out the thread i mentioned theres a schematic explaining the idea.

I built my 5e3 with one channel. I paralelled the first tube so i did'nt waist half a tube. Then I added a switch under the chassis to change the voicing on the cathode cap and resistor to 2.7 ohm and a .68 cap. I liked it. Max

I've been daydreaming about a 5E3 circuit that simply uses an On/On/On switch for Bright/Both/Normal "channel" switching.  You could always add Bruce Collins' switching or tweak the Normal channel from the get go.

EDIT: wish I could think of a way to add a Presence control to the 5E3 circuit.

Cheers,

Chip

We have proven once again no plan survives contact with the enemy, or in this case, with the amp.
