TOS Layout for review
« on: March 07, 2011, 12:54:33 pm »
Here is a proposed layout for the TOS I am building.  While I have all of the parts I have not done any building.  It is the basic TOS with effects loop and VVR.  I copied the layout posted here and added the effects loop in the middle.  It will the most complicated amp I have built.  I don't expect anybody to trace out the circuit.  I am wanting some input about the layout I have come up with.  Does it look reasonable?  Please point out any potential issues especially with the grounding scheme.  Everything is drawn to scale.  Yes I spent a fair ammount of time to do this.  I saw it as a good excercise to get to know the circuit and to try and think of everything.  I am hoping drawing it all out will give me the best chance for success.

I did not draw the heater wires.  My plan is to run them straight down the middle of the tubes up in the air above the sockets.  The relay board is just a blank at this point.  The VVR is a unit I bought and represented by the pot.

If you want to look at the schematic I can post it.

EDIT - Here is a link for a high-res file.   http://www.diyeffects.com/picts/TOS_layout.png

EDIT 3/10 I added a gif of the schematic

Thanks,
SLW

Can you upload another layout? And don't make the background transparent?
A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

Yes, the resolution is not easy to read, can you fix that first?
On your grounding - I am confused - I see you have four black dots around the grey square on the left with wires going to them. Are these dots the bolts of the power transformer?
The power cable comes in and is maybe drawn with grounded to a transformer bolt. That life saving ground is best taken to a dedicated bolt with nothing else there, except for a toothed washer to get good contact. On amps that I have repaired that ground has mostly been loose, or even hanging off, when on the PT bolt.

Sorry about the bad resolution.  I was worried about that when I cut down the size of the file.  I have posted a link to a higher resolution image in the original post.  I drew it up in inkscape and the background looks white in the original file.  I imported the png file into gimp to reduce the size and that is when the background became transparent.  I have used bothe programs for a while now but not in this combination.  I learned something new today.

Yes the dots are the bolts on the PT.  I can always give that a dedicated ground.

The new resolution is fantastic.
We may need the link to your schematic, or did I miss a version here with all the components numbered?

I happen to be laying out a TOS type circuit at the moment too, but am going to try 6SL7s.
