5E3 deluxe circuit with 5k:8 ohm transformer?
« on: April 20, 2011, 10:01:49 pm »

I've got a 5k:8ohm output transformer rated for 35watts.    I'd like to use it in a deluxe 5E3 build I've stopped and restarted (had a  6.6k:16/8/4ohm for the 5E3,  but ended up using it in a Gemini I).

Will the 5K:8ohm work?  what mods to the circuit would be needed to adapt it properly?

No it will explode!

Seriously it will work, but the optimum load for a pair of 6V6's is 8k for a 5E3.You could just double the speaker load to 16 ohms for a 10k load which will work better. If you don't want to do that, consider using a pair of 6L6's.
at 5k the load is not really enough for 6V6's.

Phsyconoodler, thanks for the reply.

maybe its just a case that I'm trying to mate the wrong components,   I thought about trying it with 6L6's, but then I'm concerned I draw too much for the 41316 PT I have which is rated at 120ma. If 6L6's will draw too much current in a 5E3 for the 41316 PT,  I guess the answer is just to adjust the cathode resistor so that the amp is biased  with 6L6s at 120ma.... or get a 8k:8ohm PT. ..

When folks run 6L6s in 5E3s, are they swapping in a bigger PT?

FWIW it could sound really good with a fixed bias pair of 6V6s idling at about 390. I did a 5G9 with a 5k output tranny and it is magic. (Only has one tube more than a 5E3 and you get unbeatable trem into the bargain)
