AC30 Build
« on: April 22, 2011, 12:37:38 pm »
I'm want to do scratch build of the AC30.

I see the parts listing has no transformer and choke part numbers.  Where would I find the information and what other parts are missing?

Robert.

I searched the transformer section in the store and use the search catalog function and have found nothing.

Any other ideas?

Robert

Check with http://www.rjguitars.net

He can get you an Edcor, Pacific or Heyboer in many different flavors. Can get you a standard production tranny or can also have one wound for you for a few extra $$.  I made an order through them and am pleased - decent pricing and shipping.

Check out the ampgarage forum for sime interesting ideas.  There is a lot of info there on Trainwrecks, Dumbles, etc.  Maybe you find a TW Rocket clone a possibility?  It's a 4 x EL84 output with some crunch in the preamp.

cheers,

rob

http://www.tubesandmore.com/ have all the stuff you need to build an AC30 from scratch.
I advise you the Hammond trannies & chokes, as far as they are very good. Moreover, choosing Hammond allows you to build either a vintage or a modern style AC30.

I have stopped being surprised at the guitar player who spends $3,000 on the latest boutique amplifier, and plugs in his Mexican Stratocaster strung with light gauge strings through a Big Muff Pi fuzz pedal.

The OT might matter but voltage is voltage. There's no reason in the world to pay extra for a PT that's advertised as for an AC30. Hammond, Heyboer, Edcor, even Weber are fine for a PT as long as the voltage and current ratings are correct. Don't let hype trump science.

I agree with 38Super, you can't go wrong with Rj's units.  He can also make you a chassis I believe.  Mag comp has reasonably priced AC30 units also : http://www.classictone.net/Vox-Style-Transformers.html
