6BG6GT verdict?
« on: July 12, 2011, 09:41:42 pm »
After a site search for 6BG6GT I see that the jury may still be out on these tubes in guitar amps. Some love 'em, some (whom I respect greatly) think they suck.
I have a 65 Vibroverb build I'd like to try 7851As in but they are WAY too expensive.
Any comments?

Hmmmm. Not promising.
Is it microphonics, poor sound, or the inherently dangerous plate cap? Cuz I'm from the South, safety ain't a concern. :think1:

Just a joke, folks.

 Hey, some of the most terrifying fun I've ever had started with "hey, watch this!"
Tapping into the inner tube.

sound, safety, mostly microphonics - they sing when you overdrive them hard. they sounded OK, that's just that though, just OK, but in all fairness, richard and i didn't deviate much from the published plans for 6L6G. in retrospect, perhaps we should have. the last few years of sylvania's production are claimed to have the STR-387 plate structure.
i wouldn't use them just for safety concerns + plate caps are very delicate. not something i'd want to haul around.

I was disappointed with the 6BG6.  I cracked a tube taking off a plate cap and had another one go cracklie on me.  This amp doesn't see much use.  On the bench with a dummy load, the bottles sang audibly.  IMO you're money ahead using the correct tube.

But they're so CHEAP!
Well, ya get what ya pay for.
I don't go thru lots of power tubes anyway. I just got some SED 6L6GCs in the mail today, I'll see if they live up to the hype.
The ultimate goal was for more headroom in the VV, guess I'll just have to make a Twin.
