It's me , the PITA with the AA764 champ build!
« on: July 17, 2011, 06:34:31 pm »
I tried a 350 pf for the treb cap in the treb control , what it did was affect the bass control too and caused a sort of mutted affect . I also tried a few at hand small caps across the 100k plate load resister not more than .0022uf and still what this does is take something away , sure it cuts the highs yet at the same time it also alters the what I would call the punch or clarity of the entire amp , perhaps transparency if that's what it can be called . Turning the treb pot down a bit cuts the highs but does not cause the mutted affect .

I even tried to make them switchable to see if a combination of the two cap changes would do.

What ever I do that strays away for the AA764  stock setup results in something worse that I can't adjust out .

I even tried the jensen C10R speaker and it has a rounder bass yet the highs are even more shrill , I put the weber sig 10s ceramic back in. I also have an old but good 12ax7a that says USA on it and it really brings on the chime , a ruby 12ax7 that is less chime but still bright , a sovtek 12ax7wa that seemed like a good choice off the website yet it is not much different , perhaps what I would say dry sounding so I put the JJ 12ax7 or ECC83 back in since it is darker sounding. I tried a EH 6V6 I have a matched set and it picked up a static noise , the ruby 6V6 BC also a matched set and it sounded like the old RCA 6V6GT but a bit brighter and the JJ 6V6s whcih seems to give me the best bottom end .

My choices are down to perhaps making a new cab out of pine that I have laying around instead of the 3/4" thick mahogany plywood including the baffle . The cab has a 10 inch cutout in the baffle with grill cloth over this so the baffle is 3/4" thick and cannot move sort of like a real old gibson amp . Or just live with it as is. This is a photo of the cabs front . And the top. I cannot afford any more speakers or OT's and tubes . I did plug the champ into the MM bass amp cab which has a weber sig 12 s alnico and that did seem to balance things out where that made the most difference . That is my only other  amp which is my 6G2/5E3 build .

I did notice one thing , if I play the champ build in the living room whcih is combined with this dining room and no carpet the champ sounds better . This is where I used to play my badly missed 73 SF champ . It really make no noticable diff where I play the 6G2/5E3 . That old 73 sf champ with the weber sig 8s alnico sounded wonderfull at low levels , it was full had bottom and tone when cranked it broke up a bit and lost the bottom , when played through two heavy duty eminence 12's it sounded like a huge amp . I wish i would have kept the weber sig 10s alnico 4 ohm when they made them or one of the few weber sig8s alnicos I did have that i cannot afford now. The glitch is weber describes all of the above mentioned speakers as bright woody reedy tone later breakup . well it sort of depends on the amp and this I do know.

Nice work on the cabinet! If you want to experiment with wood, try some 12mm or half inch plywood (you said you have some pine- but Baltic Birch is pretty nice too if you have access to some). Thinner wood will vibrate more which is bad for stereo speakers, but great for instrument speakers (tone thing if you're so inclined). If your amp sounds better in a room with tile and no rugs (lots of hard surfaces), It ain't the treble you want- it's (upper) midrange. Play with the 'scoop' resistor, mebbe try the Duncan tone control simulation toy. If it's too harsh sounding, or 'ice-picky' try a 4" or 5" circle of heavy felt pinned to the middle of the speaker grille. That helps with the highs beaming and leaves the mids relatively alone.
This problem calls for a bigger hammer!

I built this cab  to fit a crate Vintage club 20 with the white tolex . The old crate tube vintage club 20 was really a great amp , better than the fender pro Jr or the blues jr because it has a tube for the reverb and had a gain stage and was well built . I just liked the old gibson cabs that came out a bit later with the chassis and controls on the back and on the bottom . I kept this cab and sold the VC and then built a 6G2 out of it using a hammond chassis that I drilled and made into a reasonable workable 6G2 . Then put that chassis in a larger willow cab and then decided to use the same cab for the AA764 that's why the speaker is not centered , I used the side rather than the top for the new narrow panel tweed chassis .
