what can be used to repair tolex?
« on: July 18, 2011, 09:26:23 am »
I have a cabinet where the tolex is peeling back.  I think all it needs is to be glued.  What kind of glue is best to use?

I see online amp places are selling "tolex glue" but I am hoping I can just find and use something locally acquired at a hardware store.

Any recommendations?

Titebond has always worked for me. I'd even use elmer's if I had it .....

Tightbond should work fine, but you will have to clamp it while the glue dries.  Depending on where the repair is on the cabinet, you may just be able to use masking tape.  The only problem is, if you want a really good repair when using Tightbond, you really need to get the old glue out.  It will probably be fine if you don't, but....

Personally, though, my favorite glue for cabinets is hot hide glue, but then I already had experience with hide glue, and I've already got all the equipment to make it easy to use.

For small tears with a flap I have had great success with a CA Gel type glue.   But for what you explained (pealing back) weldwood contact cement will work well also.

A bit late to the party, but for small tears I often use a push-pin to hold the tolex in place while the glue dries.
