Hammond S6 Chord Organ
« on: August 18, 2011, 11:40:14 am »
I notice these had a large compliment of tubes, lots of 12au7s a couple of 6V6 and a 5AR4 it looks like, plus a couple of transformers. Are these worth messing with?

I'd say it's worth messing with if the price is right. You may be able to use the 6V6's, 5AR4, PT and OT as the starting point for a 15 watt push-pull amp. The 12AU7's don't have enough gain to be very useful in a typical guitar amp configuration, although the handle current well and I think I remember someone building a push-pull very low wattage amp with the 12AU7's as the power tubes.

Good Iron and those are usually "Hammond-Labeled" RCA Blackplate 6V6 that have been run so tame that they'll still be in good shape.

This is not a "Tonewheel" Hammond so I won't put a curse on you if you want to part it out. It uses tube oscillators for tone generation. The 12AU7's will be good quality, but they don't do much for us in the guitar amp field.

Lots of parts!

Dont forget, There are a couple good switches, usually a switchcraft jack or two, 3 miles of wire, ooo! and speakers too! OH and maybe 100+ screws, washers nuts and other hardware.

I get between 4 and 6 organs a year to harvest parts from. I wont pay more than $25 for them, unless its a tone wheel hammond, those go to the chopping block! Keyboardist still love those!

You can probably re-use the tube sockets, too, if you drill out the mounting rivets and use a desoldering bulb to clean up the pins.

That's HEDDLY! (just saw that for about the 20th time over the weekend. I still find it as funny as ever).

I was inspired a bit by Doug's avatar, I love Slim Pickens movies, I think my Favorite is Dr. Strangelove, with Blazing Saddles a real close second.
