TungSol KT66's in a Loose Change modded '77 Super Reverb head
« on: September 20, 2011, 01:46:15 am »
Dan was gracious enough to modify this amp for me and what a stellar job he did at that.  Since that time I've replaced the main caps - thank your Mr. Hoffman for prompt service - everything went well with the upgrade from original.  Lately I had to flesh out an order to get free shipping from an AMAZON vendor so I got some TungSol KT66's as they draw the same filament current as a 6L6CG.  OK I removed the clam shells as advertised then installed the spring retainers, tubes and biasd to 35MA @ 500P/V.  Damn this thing sounds good - much more harmonic complexity coming from the high end and I actually had to turn the bass up a tad on both channels.

Overall it was the upgrade with the biggest effect I've done to the amp since modding it in the first place!!!!11

Hi Mike.
What took you so long to jump on this forum? I've got a set of KT66's in my Super Reverb too. They sound great, especially when I set the volume up around 6.
Glad you are still liking the amp. It's been a while.

I tried JJ 6L6GCs, TS 5881s, and Sovtek 6L6WXT+s in my TOS before landing on the TS KT66s- what a difference.
Where does one find the hardware to mount them in upside-down Fender chassis? I'm dying to try them in my Vibroverb......

A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!
