Question about Marwi conversion to LED
« on: October 18, 2011, 12:59:16 am »
Hi Doug.  The trails are pretty dark here in the Pacific Northwest.  I have a pair of the "old style" Marwi housings, one with the switch on the back and one with the handlebar mount switch.  I was thinking of converting to LED, keeping one on the existing handlebar mount and moving the other to a helmet mount.  Is it doable for me to buy the other parts and convert these housings?  I think I can handle the machining required.  However I notice you say you say you only supply finished lights, not kits for the reason that it would be too difficult for the DIY'er

It's extrememly difficult to build the driver/switch assembly and assemble it all together inside the tiny bell shaped housings.

You don't need a kit because you already have some of the items.
If you think you can do it, all the parts are on my web store.
There's no machining except some tiny dremel rasp bit stuff on the current limiter boards.

This page shows how I assemble the driver and switch

This page shows all the parts I use
http://www.el34world.com/Misc/bike/PartsList2.htm

There really won't be any way I can help if it does not work.

Here's a short test video I did on a trail behind my house
I was testing my new 1280P HD action Cam
The lights are the P7 led's that I build
I should have some more interesting night videos as soon as we start our night riding season.

For some reason Youtube has changed the brightness level on my uploaded video
The original video is much brighter.

Hey Doug - You don't happen to have any P7 flashlights laying around, do you?  Preferably 2 cell?  I know I can order one, but boy it heebs me out to shop in chine via internet....  Maybe add one to your next order and I'll be happy to give you handling charge?

Thanks,
Jim

Sorry... :hijack1:

No two cell models
I have 3 of the one cell models spread through out my property.

They have dropped $10 bucks in price the last couple years
Now the Chinese have a US, UK and AUS warehouse

Some items ship from the US
Here's one of the models that I have, but the US warehouse is currently out of stock

Hey Doug, do you ever run into any bears or other wildlife at night?

At night,
Just owls, but we do hear coyotes howling
Sometimes they are close, but you will never see them
They are very cleaver and good at avoiding human contact

I see more bears during the daytime, which is good
Rather not wonder where a bear is in the dark

Doug,

I have a buddy who pack horsed into the Canadian wilderness on a hunting trip.  There were a couple of St. Louis Blues hockey players on the trip too.  Several times at night they were being stalked by brown bears and grizzlies.  Their guide was packing big time just in case.  In the day, they never bothered, it was only at night when they were on the horses.  He thought it was funny that the big tough hockey players were scared crapless.  I'm sorry, but I would be right there with them!  I suppose black bears will stay out of your way unless you bother their cubs?  A few years back we were in the Smokies and there was a black bear crashing through the woods parallel with our trail following us - yes, I was scared crapless....

Oh, I have an SST-90 5-Mode 2300-Lumen Memory LED Flashlight on order.  I will let you know how that one works.

No, but all the fins on the thing make it look pretty wicked!  Or like I'm carrying around a jug from a Harley! :icon_biggrin:
