Replacing Can Capacitors on a Stereo Tube Amp
« on: October 30, 2011, 12:22:38 pm »
So.....I'm going to replace two 40 MFD and one 10MFD presently in a can on top with the same same value caps below.  I'll just disconnet the appropriate "sign" on the bottom and connect that wire to the positive of the replacement cap now underneath and connect the negative of that same cap to the nearest convenient ground.  That should be OK  right??

How about securing.  Are the connection of the two leads enough as long as the wires are sleeved or should I do something else.  I have some nice "Goop" (the actual name) thats used to glue anything on cars.  Could I use that if I needed?    Thanks.

That will work. If you can solder the replacement cap negative leads to the mounting tabs of the old can, that might be better. Sometimes space will not permit.

If this amp is gonna be used in a stationary environment, I would not glue anything. Leads may be enough support. Cable ties work pretty good too. If it's gonna be hauled around, better to anchor the caps securely.
A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!
