Grounded AC outlet for Fender rear panel.
« on: November 07, 2011, 07:27:13 am »
I have a '65 Bassman.  I upgraded the AC to a grounded plug and I was wondering if anyone sold a 3 prong replacement for the ungrounded style rear panel courtesy AC outlet.

Marsh Amps has them. Here's one of his ebay auctions...

Probably get it cheaper from your local electrical supply house. Take your old one with you to be sure the new one will fit.
A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

Thought I checked eBay....must not have used the right search....but at $30, I guess I'll leave the old one.
Thanks.

A standard 120V single receptacle does not fit w/o getting medieval on the chassis.

It's unauthentic, but for band-amps I have put a metal 2-gang wall-box down in the bottom of the cabinet. With a square wall-box you can have four outlets. (If you get this generous, use a hefty power cord just in case the 999-Watt bass amp gets fed from the guitar-amp's outlets.)

This does mean scrupulously sturdy wiring from main chassis down through cab and into box.

A small advantage: with the aux outlet down low in the amp, when a cord gets tripped-on it is less likely to topple the amp. Top-heavy amps with high aux outlets are just begging for a fall.

Makes more sense to me to just screw a dual or quad outlet box with 15/20 amp cord to the cabinet and just plug the wimpy amp cord into that. No need to chop the amp.
