does my logo seem centered? opinions please
« on: November 16, 2011, 10:45:28 pm »
I'm finishing up a guitar build for my nephew. I just added my logo decal to the headstock when my daughter (an artist) INSISTED that I move tho logo to the right.

She explained after that I should center it by "weight" That is to say my logo has different fonts and visually is heavier on the left.

At first glace I can see she is correct, but as I wet sanded the finish and had to stare at it, I could see it only as off center.

Am I over thinking this? (typical me) and my OCD of lining things up to .001" (machinist for many years)

Or is she right  that if perfectly centered, it will always look lopsided.

It's not too late to sand it out and do it again, I'll only loose a couple days work, or leave it and move on?

All opinions will be considered

Thanks guys

Ray

Well, it's hard to say, as I don't have it in my hands, but in that picture it looks like it is too far to the treble side.

Thats what I think Gabriel, my daughter says it should be that way on purpose.

LOL I used right and left because its a left handed guitar, treble side on this one will be to the left.

Sorry... It's not centered and it's not straight. If the angle was intended, than if it were centered the 'L' would be too close to the left side tuning peg hole. It's your piece so have it as you like.

I off-center the handles on my amp heads so that it balances when carried. Some people hate that. I asked a major cab maker one time to do that and he refused. :-)

Hey, that headstock looks great!  Can we see the rest of the guitar?  To me the off-center AND the tilt allow the largeness of the E to place the L and the c to sit by the tuners "right" in an artistic sense.  But, that's just what I see in that picture.  If you do sand off and place another one more to the right, don't move it much, IMO.

Thanks for the help guys.

When I took that pic, the neck was nearly done. A little finish sanding on the fretboard the press in the frets and dress.

BUT! when I wetsanded the face of the headstock to level the nitro, I had jumped the gun a tad and fitted the bone nut.

What happened was I had exposed, unfinished wood where the nut seats, and when wet sanding, water got to it.

the neck twisted 3/16" counter clockwise from maybe half way from the nut to the first fret and to the top of the headstock.

so much for getting this done before x-mas!

I haven't sourced any more quartersawn maple yet, but I will soon I hope.

I'm taking it as a blessing, I was never really happy with the neck, lots of tiny mistakes. although I will say the fretboard was an exception piece of rosewood, and so was the headstock face, Oh well !
