check out this kit from weber, basically it is a sunn 200s in pentode form instead of UL. Change the O/P tranny and you can make it UL

look at an ampeg b15 or b25 for a good sounding, easy build tube amp. also check out sunn 200s, a very easy build

As stated already if you want to build a tube bass amp here are your easiest choices:

Ampeg b15 or b25
Sunn 200s

Most of the newer bass amps are solid state, or have a solid state power stage.  Even the big GKs with tube preamps have solid state power stages.  I am not even sure if Ampeg makes a full tube amp anymore.  Trace Elliot, SWR, Gallien Kreuger, Mesa Boogie, they are almost completely solid state.

hi

in fact, is the solid state power bass amp is better than full tube? because my friend told me power tube the weak point is bass. tube can provide very good bass response. is it correct?

what bass amp you think good? i just know SWR is very good.

It depends what you want to do with it.  If you want to play at home with a nice sounding bass amp them build the Ampeg b-15.  If you want to play clubs, then you are going to need something bigger.  I play a Fender 300PS live, it will fill a pretty big room, and it has the perfect sound for me. I have played for 500 people thru it, but big tube bass amps are finicky, and building a 300PS would be ridiculous.

What do you want to do with the bass amp you build?

Honestly, I hate saying it, but if you want to build a bass amp for a band room, and are going to be playing Metallica or Megadeath, you are better off buying a used solid state bass amp.

OR, build a preamp, like an Ampeg B-15, and run that into a solid state power amp.

Bass takes a TON of power to really be heard over drums and loud guitar amps.  Especially if you are playing metal.  SWR and Trace Elliot are great for playing metal, they are nice sounding solid state heads.  But I doubt you really want to build a solid state head.

I used to play in a band that was loud.  I mean REALLY loud.  We played a combination of Punk and Metal and a Gallien Kreuger 700rb was fine.  You can get them used for a few fundred $$$.   SWR and Trace Elliot are great too.  So are MESA and Ampeg, but you are getting into more money.

If you absolutely must build your own, and you have the experience to do it (I dont) then build an Ampeg SVT.  Lots of big names play Ampeg.

A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

I have an Ampeg SVT-800 pro.  Bought it used for $700 in like new condition.  IMO not a better bass amp.   Solid State and will make your eyes blurr when running through an 8, 10's cab.  I don't think you can build anything near this amp for under $1400.  Most of the time, unless you have transformers on hand, building is more expensive than buying.  The only reason I build amps is so I can ahve fun and also build things which you cannot buy anymore.  It simply costs more to build than buy.  When I played in the 70's, all the bass players used Ampegs and Sunn all tube.  We also had more trouble with them than any other piece of equipment.  I also have a crown PA amp Macro-Tech 5002 connected to a small Mackie mixer running 2, 18's acoustic speakers.  The cool thing about PA equipment is you can get it used for about 20% of new.  For small gigs I use a SWR readhead.  I can build a bass amp as I am capable, but why unless you are trying to get a specific sound and most of the time the sound is the cabinet and Bass Guitar rather than the amp.  Search for what Barry Oakley used.  He played with the Allman Brothers and had one of the best bass tones I have heard.  He had a Guy in Macon Georgia custom make cabinets for him.  He used all different kinds of heads, but always sounded the same
