Best Cheap Delay
« on: February 20, 2012, 08:22:51 am »
I've done a lot of looking/reserarch the last month for a best bang for the buck cheap slap back delay that I can just sit on top of my amp just to mostly jam around the house. The Danelectro D-8 FAB delay won out for $25.00 Free Shipping. The same thing happened when I was looking for a good cheap tremolo, the Danelectro Cool Cat Tremolo won out. So if the D-8 works as good as the tremolo, I will be pleased.

Every now and then I get a hankering to drag out my no reverb amp projects and jam on it while the wife and I watch TV(to my wife's dismay) and I can't stand a dry amp. I use to have a cheap Arion delay for this but it died. So enter the D-8. Platefire

The digitech digidelay is great for the money too. Probably more features then you're looking for but.... I just like the digitech delay sound for some reason. I now own a Timebender.

I had an old Digitech 1000 something? The one with two pedals--one for delay and one for looping. It sounded great but eventually died. I later bought a cheap Arion delay and it lasted about 3 years before it died.

Presently I've got an old 80's DOD FX90 analog delay on my small pedalboard and a Line 6 DL4 on my large pedalboard. I've also got a Boss RV3 that I leave on top of Boogie Rocket 440 at church. Delay is really my main effect even more than reverb.

I just wanted this new delay for when I drag out one of my 1482's, DIY Champ, Pignose V40 or one or my DIY Bogen or Dukane heads to have my delay without hooking up a pedalboard. Something I can just sit on top of the amp with a patch cord to the input and go at it. I leave it on all the time with a slapback setting, so I don't need a true bypass.

It came in this afternoon and I tested it on a 1482/tele, it sounded great and passed the test. The sound is there, now how long it will last??? Platefire

Well I'm not to happy today with this delay. In the past I've always used my old flea market power supplies with all my pedals and they worked fine. Well with this pedal it noisy with hum! With the battery fine but with every power supply I've tried it with it's noisy.

Now to use this pedal the way I intended to, with a power supply and not batterys, I'm going to have to purchase a noisless power supply. That kind of defeats the purpose of getting it at a cheap price in the first place. I guess they are making pedals now where you have to buy their power supply. I got this from Musician Friend and they have discontinues selling the Danelectro DA-1 power supply. Got a good mind to send it back. Platefire

Sounds like your existing power supply is somewhat noisy, and the Danelectro circuit is missing some decent filtering. So why not add your own?

Well I've already ordered the Dano DA-1 "no hum" power supply but I'm still interested. Looked at the schematic but the hookup is still fuzzey to me. So bias resistors have got me confused. You got you power supply/Regulator/Pedal----I'm assuming you would have to put the regulator in a small chassis or box with jacks, plug your power supply into the regulator box and have cord to go from regulator to pedal. Kinda hard for me to visulize at this point??? Platefire

I'm sorry. My post was as clear as mud. I meant adding the power supply filter circuitry to an existing pedal (if possible) as a modification.

There was a great thread on here about building your own well filterd/regulated power supply for pedals. I'm going to see if I can find it.

Here. All about building your own pedal power supply: http://www.el34world.com/Forum/index.php?topic=9657.0

Thanks! I looked the DIY PS over. Both of my pedal boards are quite. I got the dano PS in Monday and it worked good on the Dano delay without any noise--so I guess I'm good now. I played out with the dano delay, Hwy 1 Tele and my DIY Champ Sunday, and it worked very good. Platefire
