Recording help
« on: March 10, 2012, 12:34:54 pm »
Hey all,
I know this doesn't belong here & not sure where it fits but moderators please hold off for a day or two before moving as I'd like as many suggestions as possible:

I Just got my new pc built, up & running. Intel Core i7 Quad CPU, dual mirrored internal 1.5TB & 2TB external drives respectively, 8GB RAM, Windows 7 Professional, etc. and am still loading software and various updates. One of the first things was to update JSchem & my PreSonus digital interface unit but my CuBase LE program isn't supported w/ Windows 7 so that's about my biggest bummer for recording is concerned. I do have JamVox working for simulated amps, effects, & speaker cabs to record with but it's not something to record my own amps & speaker cabs with for "real world" recordings. Do you have any recording software suggestions that are good and aren't crazy amounts of money?

TYIA, Keo

Try Reaper. Cheap and it works well. I believe updates are perpetually free as well (or at least within major point releases).

Hey Jojo!

I have used Mixcraft for years now and upgraded with each new version.  Great program with lots of goodies.  I think Doug and quite a few other folks here use it too.

Mixcraft 6 is just about to be released

Mixcraft is hard to beat
Easy to operate and does not cost much.
Plus tons of cool features like built in free VSTI instruments, etc

I have used Mixcraft for all my recordings for maybe 10 years
http://www.acoustica.com/

Mixcraft 5 is only $75, but M6 should be out in a couple weeks and it has a bunch more cool stuff
I have been testing beta M6, and it is really cool
I record the output of my Guitar Rig stuff directly into mixcraft

Thanks guys! Do you just go for the basic

Doug - I'm still not getting any replies into my email - even with the new computer and I've checked all my settings that I know of. Same as the old computer also. I wish I could get reply emails but I'm out of options/guesses as to why!? I'm going to change my notification email address and see if they start coming again-

Get a generic free Yahoo address and see if they come through.

I'ts working fine for me
It's probably your ISP doing some sort of blocking
Comcast is one of the ISP's that seems to give people problems

Sorry there, brain fade. Mixcraft has several software versions at the moment & wondering if the basic version is plenty or if Pro Studio is worth the extra cost associated with it? ie, extra virtual instruments, drum loops/virtual effects, etc.? I'm guessing so?

Email notices are finally getting through now using an existing MSN account. There were no blocked emails w/ Verizon or other filters going on after thoroughly going through account settings several times but something was causing it over there in any event. Who knows why? That's okay, MSN may work out better anyway. Thanks for the help.

Just regular mixcraft is just fine

BTW,
To answer your PM questions here

Mixcraft is recording software but you can also play and record VSTI instruments in it like moogs, organs, piano's, etc
You can play them on your keyboard or get a with a midi controller keyboard.
Mixcraft comes with a ton of cool VSTI instruments
You can also go out to the web and find free VSTI instruments that you can add to Mixcarft

Guitar Rig is just effects, you still have to have recording software to record the output from guitar rig
Effects in GR include amps, cabinets, mics, tons of stuff like wah pedals, etc

I found Audacity very intriguing....in the free dept.
It comes from the Linux family but there are versions for PC and Mac too.
I don't use this software at the moment, a consideration in the future.
Just throwing out other options.
Good luck with your quest.

I have installed and used the Audacity program at the end of last week. It works very well and for free you can't complain. I think it's doing such a good job at the moment I'm not sure I'll have to use the Mixcraft or others!? Since mp3 exporting is considered a protected 3rd party program they even provide a free encoding link for that too. I've only done a few test recordings but I'm back in business & using my PreSonus interface too.
