guitar woods
« on: April 07, 2012, 10:52:44 pm »
I've been getting the project list slowly cleared off. So looking to start planing another probably for next winter. I've been looking for a sorce for some black ebony wood. 1x1x5 pieces same kind of quality that was used for piano keys. I would need 10 or so pieces. Can't find anything anywhere. I thinking about useing African black wood instead, looks to be a related ebony but from pictures it looks a little greyer with a looser grain structure. Anyone ever work with it before? Know anything about it?

I'v been thinking about doing a kind of fender body shape with bloodwood top and bottom and a bass wood core to keep the weight down. I want to use the ebony or a similar dark black wood around the entire outside edge of the guitar.

Don't use blackwood - bad enviromental juju on that stuff (over-foresting).

You can get Ebony just about anywhere that sells guitar woods.  Try LMI, Stew-Mac, Exotic Woods, and probably Hibdon Hardwood.  LMI and Giduani (Exotic Woods) will have ebony binding, if that's what you need.

I was trying to avoid the blackwood, I think a found place that sells some ebony pen blanks that would probably work. I will have to call them and find out what they have instock. Couldn't find it yesterday, but right after I posted I found it.
