New strat build - HSS
« on: April 18, 2012, 12:01:04 am »
I'm building a guitar and wanted to post my progress! I'll include a picture of my orginal idea/render(which was SSS). I'm going with a HSS just because i NEVER use the single coil bridge pickup. I wanted hummbucker there to get some brighter breakup sounds (I imagine johnny B good). I know theres alot who are loyal SSS fans.

Neck:
Warmoth - all maple - stainless steel jumbo frets -  10 to 12" radius - CBS headstock - SRV contour - satin nitro finish (ETA 1st JULY)

Body:
Fender outlet unfinished - Adler wood

Hardware:
guitar fetish mostly, i'm sure ill upgrade eventually but wanted to save a few dollars here and grade later if need be.

Pickups:
Neck and mid are 59's based single coils from Chevalierpickups and the bridge hummbucker is a Seymour Duncan antiquity, already got them and just the sounds I was looking for.

Looks like a good start to me...

then again I'd be a little more sacrilegious to a strat. (Esp since I do own an ESP/LTD M-100)... I too would probably go with the HSS setup, but opt for a little bit more customization.... toggles for the P/Us, ala Steve Stevens instead of the 5-way switch. (I could mix all three P/U that way... might need a toggle or two for phase inversion IF I wanted it for the neck and mid p/u's)

Just don't blind anyone with that pickgaurd when the spotlight's on you.

If the humbucker has 4 wires then, if you want, with a standard switch you can short one of the humbuckers coils in the mid/bridge position. So humbucker is still humbucker but when you're in the bridge/mid position one coil of the humbucker shorts and that position is humbucking too.(single coil + one coil of humbucker=humbucker vs. single coil + humbucker=hum/noise).
