My latest amp
« on: May 22, 2012, 08:38:08 pm »
Hi,
Here's an amp I built that is basically an overdrive version of the 1954 5D8 Tweed Twin. What I did was use the 5D8 as my clean amp and on the same chassis, I have installed what amounts to a "Herzog" which I use as the over drive in the normal channel. If you are unfamiliar with the Garnet Herzog, it is essentially a small 6V6 amp like a Fender Champ which is run into a resistor load then sent to an output control and ultimately into the input of the main amp. By adjusting the Herzog's output and main volume, you end up with some massive 6V6 over drive which is finally fed into the clean channel of the 5D8 Twin.
Think the classic Guess Who American woman sound or the heavy overdrive sound of bands like Grady. Believe me, you can not get this kind of overdrive from a  stomp box or via a master volume since the real thick heavy overdrive is produced by the 6V6. I put everything on a Marshall 100 chassis. So the thing, in it's cabinet looks like a Marshall, but the sound is typical mid 50's fender when clean and that classic Herzog distortion through a Fender when I use the little overdrive amp. The other cool thing is that if I plug a speaker into one of the 1/4" jacks on the back, the 'Herzog" amp can be used as a little 5 watt practice amp since that speaker jack disconnects it from the resistive load and the main amp and lets you use it as a 5 watt stand alone amp. Anyway, the idea just came for this dude one day and I just decided to build it. I liked the idea of a Herzog and had just built a clone of a 5D8 Tweed Twin and though a Herzog and a 5D8 on the same chassis would be killer.
