What's your favorite beer?
« on: July 27, 2012, 02:51:30 pm »
Just looking to try a couple new varieties and wanted to see what you guys would suggest.
Saw a bottle make an appearance on one of Doug's YouTube channel videos and it sparked my curiosity.
I've been on a Murphy's Irish Red kick, but it's time to move on  :occasion14:

Unacceptable answers (just to save you guys some time): cold, free, etc, etc, etc

We have several small breweries up here in the mountains and they make some awesome beer.

#1 fav of mine would be Highland Gaelic Ale made in Asheville, NC
http://www.highlandbrewing.com/craft-brews/style/gaelic-ale

There's a new brewing company about 5 miles from me and they make some awesome brews also
Sit right at the bar, stare at the huge brewing tanks through glass and the 5 different beers come through tap lines from the big tank room

http://www.brevard-brewing.com/beer.html

Dales pale ale / Oskar Blues is also opening a brewery here soon

Other than local beers, Sierra Nevada makes some great brews.

Every day beer that taste great to me since I visted Mexico a few times is just plain old Corona.
When you are really thirsty, they slide down so smooth.
Could not drink the water and so Corona was what we drank all day long for hydration.

As Billy Gibbons said of the Mexican Blackbird - "She's hot as a pepper, but smooth as a Mexican brew"

Many beer snobs make fun of beers like Corona, but I like em.

Nice,,, that Highland looks right up my alley :d2:
Can I order some with my next parts order? :icon_biggrin:
I'm gonna check my local beer and wine superstore to see if it makes it this far north....I'm near Phila. Pa.

And yes, I too have a commercial favorite,, I always fall back on Heineken, when I have to....the beer snobs shun me

A seasonal winner in my book is Beck's Oktoberfest

I will on occasion have a beer. Not often. I like Shiner Bock and consider that the best beer I've tasted.

Alot of drinking for me would a beer after mowing the yard and another (2nd one) with grilling out or Mexican food all in the very same day.

Searched high and low for that Highland Gaelic, but no dice....looks like it doesn't make it any more north than Va.
If you know anyone over at the brewery, tell them to get that stuff to Phila., NYC, and Boston, and sell a ton!.......irish people will buy anything with a name like that (and we have ton of them around here),,,especially alcohol :d3:
In the meantime, I think Doug should just add it to the parts store... :icon_biggrin:
Interstate internet alcohol sales isn't illegal,,,,is it?

Picked up some Bass Ale, and Sierra Nevada Summerfest (nothing special...just good stuff)
Gonna need it to keep me company during this TOS build......still rounding up parts,,,, and clearing the bench,,,and auditioning beer...

My favorite hands down is Guinness. Also like Newcastle Brown, Steamer Ale, and Boddingtons. Long time ago I had some Foggy Bottom Winter Ale that was unbelievable, haven't found any since. Pete's Wicked used to be great but got bought out.

But I drink a whole bunch of Miller Lite and 64 in the summer too. I ain't pertickuler. Having a Smiddicks right now.

Highlands is a small brewing company in downtown Asheville
I guess you will just have to visit Asheville

Have a good pizza and some Highlands

Highlands also makes several others that are aweome
Oatmeal Porter
Black Mocha Stout
And several others that are all great!

+1 on shiner...austin folks, let's organize a trip to bocktoberfest this fall!
north coast old rasputin (and it's close cousin victory storm king)
most anything from abita, turbodog is an old favorite. can't stand the jockamo.
most anything from samuel smith, with taddy porter at the top of the list
fullers london porter, the london pride is a good lighter offering
dixie blackened voodoo, so glad they're brewing again!
stone has some pretty rockin stuff including a smooth, robust russian imperial stout
deschutes has some cool brews as well
austin beerworks is currently savaging the local scene with pearlsnap and peacemaker. real nice up-and-comers.
for belgians: maredsous, ommegang, gulden draak, and chimay blue label reserve. brilliant.
OH! and hacker-pschorr dunkelweizen may be my "stuck on a desert island, do-awl" beer.
indio and corona familiar (used to be in mexico only) have shown up recently; they remind me of eating goat street tacos on sunday mornings in MX. these beers aren't THAT great but it takes me back to that place...

but i'll always have a real special place in my heart (and GI tract) for heineken. thanks dad, RIP.

Thermion, it sounds like you really have a hard time understanding beer.... :l2:

My favs:
My winter beer is Young's Double Chocolate Stout.
My all around off the shelf is Newcastle, it is so right.
Summer beer is Thornbridge Hall ale.  Beckets or Smithwick is good too.
Any cider by Gwynt y Ddraig is good - but only if you can stay sitting down 'till it wears off!
My fav German beer is a micro in Rinteln called Waldkater.

If you can't drink it at 45 deg and have it taste good, it's cheap suds!

Thanks guys...great stuff there.....I'm creating a shopping list
My recent research has led me to a local beer "superstore" where I can mix and match single bottles of any beer they carry!
Thats TROUBLE...between this new "interest" and my desire to build every amp I see, my wife is talking to a lawyer :icon_biggrin:
I'm thinking maybe I'll get her a flux scented candle, so she'll be able to relate......that's got me thinkin,,,,,maybe there is a chemical in burning flux that makes you want to build amps and drink beer????.....maybe that's what I'll tell her

I have found that I like Anchor Steam, as a "lawn cutting" beer.............Mcsorley's Irish Ale---not so good

Fat Tire.  Pretty much the only beer I drink.  I don't drink very often, though, lately.

Also, most of the time I prefer wine.  Pinot Noirs, mostly, though I can go for just about any good Red, and I adore desert wine when it is paired properly.

I like Fat Tire Pale Ale too.

Geary's Pale Ale is a favorite whenever I'm in Maine.

Saint Georges is a sort of local brewery that makes a great IPA.

Chimay Cinq Cents is my favorite highbrow beer (too expensive to drink too much)

There's a small local bar that frequently has a cask conditioned ale, and I'll always give whatever that is a try.

My all-time favorite may be Green Flash's West Cost IPA though.  Watch out for the alcohol content on this one though!

Maybe I just like good beer...

I grew up in south-central Pennsylvania, so Yuengling was the default. If you walk into a bar there and say "lager", that's what you get. I still enjoy it, especially on a hot summer day, but it's only available on the east coast... I can't get it in Chicago.

+1 on Newcastle. It's my current go-to beer. I've also been enjoying New Belgium 1554 Black Ale, Blue Moon, and a pale ale called The Bitter End from a local brewery, Two Brothers in Warrenville. Had a crazy Belgian-style wheat ale the other day called Allagash White. Good stuff.

Thanks Thelonius, I'm actually in southeast Pa., and spent my 20's consuming way too much Yuengling Lager....
You're about the 5th guy who has suggested Newcastle....that's definitely on the shopping list, with Shiner Bock, Fat Tire (not sure if I can get that??)

It's fun to see the range of responses that I have gotten in this post.

I got a case of Speckled Hen many years ago, absolutely loved it. Haven't seen since.

And once in Newark I got Gennesee Cream Ale on tap. Unbelievably smooooth and well, creamy. That's been many moons ago.

Way back when I lived in Minneapolis, there was a great little German restaurant named The Black Forest.
Indoor/outdoor plus bar seating.
I lived a half a block from there.
Became  my "Cheers" for a few years.Sat at the bar.
They had all kinds of German beers.
My favorite was Hacker-Pschorr Hefe Weisse.
Fabulous.Great after taste.
Good times.

Moved to Seattle, they had tons of microbreweries back in the 90s.
Red Hook, etc.

Had a Fat Tire recently when I was back in the States for a spell.Nice beer.

In Japan I just drink the swill sold out of the vending machines;Asahi Dry.No choice really.
Not very good beer and expensive ($3-4 for a tall boy).
BUT, it does the job; you'll feel it after a couple.

Oh well, I started making wines so........

I'll have to check if it's still there. I usually spend most my time in the East Metro when I'm in the TC's.

The Beer for All Seasons!  I leaned more toward Kirin Ichibanshibori. Although Suntory have (had) a really decent dark beer that a few places would server that I like.

Shiner Bock.
I have made the pilgramage to the brewery.
It would be interesting to gather some folks for a jam or something at Bocktoberfest.
I know someone that has a big farm down there and has talked about a mini Woodstock on the property
to coincide with Bocktoberfest.

Got a mixed sampler for Christmas, and was surprised to find a Samuel Smith's Old Brewery Pale Ale

Just a little lighter and more drinkable than the Nut Brown I mentioned above, with a slightly less bitter taste. :d2:

Oh yeah,,,,I have an honorable mention....had this at a holiday party: Kasteel Rouge

Expensive, 8%ABV, tasted more like cherry champagne to me, BUT, my wife had about 5-6 glasses, and the night got better :icon_biggrin:
