Dukane Gets MV
« on: August 31, 2012, 09:06:30 pm »
This seems to be a process that I'm doing to all my old builds is adding a MV. Especially for amps 20 watts or more. Not a very hi-tech tweak but sure floats my boat.  :icon_biggrin:  The thing responses and sounds so much better at lower volumes now than before. Had to remove the pilot light to move the input over---the tubes are now the pilot light. Platefire

I always thought you did a fantastic job with that amp!  The new mod looks good too.

Have you ever thought about doing something with that unused preamp triode?  :dontknow: :icon_biggrin:

With respect, Tubenit

Well Thanks tubenit. As you know the color sceme was borrowed from one of your old builds. The old amp is pretty special to me because it came out of my old High School Auditorium and was the only PA system there for years. It's kind of neat to have an old 1958 amp and to have been involved with the history of it too. It's a good thing I saved the old un-used knob so now I had a matching knob for the extra volume. I love them big old knobs.

I don't really need any more amp breakup than I will get by dialing in the MV. I do the old blues thing, setting my amp to get right on the edge of breakup and use my guitar volume to go between clean and grit. The MV just allows me do that at reasonable volumes plus the touch responsiveness is way enhanced. I know you could sure help me if I wanted add those extra bells and whistles. You've helped me on past projects and I appreciate it very much. If I ever decide to, I'll sure be giving you a holler.

I've been loosely following your new amp project which is way over my head but I know when you get it complete, it will be right! I listened to some of your sound clips on your last amp and was amazed at your tone and playing--very good! Platefire

Paralleling V1 will give you a Fatter Tone, but also is an implementation on noise rejection

this will be a very simply mod, only a bit more complicated if you add a switch to connect the input grid of V1b to the input or to the ground as to exclude it

Thanks K

Yep! Your right. There is a lot that could be done with this amp considering I have a V1/b unused gain stage plus an extra unused 9 pin socket. Maybe someday, not right now. The possible mod considerations would be a lot more icing on the cake but the MV is a major priority to my guitar operations. When my time is more free and open my mind will naturally go the the amp possibilities
before me. I love carfully planning out an amp execution route and then bringing it to life. So you may have not seen the last of this old Dukane but for now this is good step in the right direction. Platefire

Thanks! DL

That conversion was done in 2006. This is the first mod I've done to it. The original intention was to build a 5F6A very close to the original circuit so I could just experiance it since I don't have a 59 Bassman.

The High School Auditorium it came out of is the only remaining original building of my old high school, all the other buildings have been replaced. My old high school picking buddy was given the amp by the contractors that was doing some renovation in the old auditorium. Somehow he had contact with them or knew them and they gave it to him, probably thinking it was a worthless piece of junk. I was over at my buddys house showing him my DIY Champ and he handed me the old Dukane. He said since you like to rebuild amps, try this one! Platefire
