Speaker ID for AIMS Dual Twelve
« on: October 23, 2012, 08:15:15 pm »
I'm in the process of fixing up an AIMS Dual Twelve for a friend. Among other things it has this occasional raspy scratchy noise on attack at high volumes that I don't think is coming from the circuit, I believe it's one or both speakers.

They look like they're original, alnico 12"s. The only marking is "52-7 67 7437".

This amp was made in the '70s.
This was just a brief survey of the amp & how it sounds, before opening it up.

My question is, should my friend pay out to have the speakers fixed (if the problem persists after a recap & maintenance) or get new speakers? Questions, comments, suggestions?

I don't know if the speakers should be replaced or reconed, or even if they're the problem. More investigation is required.

But 67 is the EIA code for Eminence, according to WeberVST.

True. The caps are on their way, and time will tell.
The few blurbs I've seen online about this amp seem to indicate the speakers are the weak link in this powerful amp. They must be 1974 Eminence speakers. But, they sound good if not pushed too hard, and the guts need a little love anyhow. So I'll post w/ results....
