Gary Clarke Jr.....caught this on Letterman the other night
« on: November 24, 2012, 09:28:03 am »
So 1 minute I'm sitting there just watching corny Dave,,,,,and the next minute I'm getting punched in the face by this guys Vibro King

I didn't know there was anyone out there making "Soul Blues" (then again I wasn't looking).....little by little it's sh!t like this that is inspiring me to get back out there
Repetitive YES,,,do I care?,, NO........does this qualify as a 1 chord song?

I'm soo pised off that I can't sing .........anyone know where I can get a couple P90s and a VK schematic :icon_biggrin:

Hmmm, I'm not feeling it

A bit too much like my first garage band I guess.

Yeah,,,I can understand that....
I think it was just more about the moment, for me......Dave telling dumb jokes in a nice clean well lit set and then WHAM,lights out,,,this guy just droning on one chord......I don't know,,,,maybe it was the double neck and the fur collar  :l2:.... or the heroin

It was really the depth of that guitar tone that did something for me......I'm thinking some type of Octave device through that VK??
And I liked the rawness of the distortion he was using...

I had the surround sound on and it sounded much beefier than re-listening to it now through my PC speakers.......excuses,, excuses

To each his own on the tone thing

To me, it sounded like mud

It's just a personal preference of mine

I like a little more definition and not so much mud.

Everyone is different as to what they like.

I totally understand that...in fact, your comments made me go back and question what it was I did like about it ,and that is always good...
I had put the guitar down for some time (2005-recent),,so anything that makes me want to play is a good thing...and I'm finding good things everywhere I look......especially on this forum,,,,and especially in your recordings, so I really respect your opinion

Listening back, it's the rawness that stands out (some almost intentional sloppy playing,,,if that makes sense)...
But, the thing I liked in his sound was a hint of a lower octave in the main guitar parts...beyond the mud

I have never tried an Octavia or anything like that, but did recently try a MXR Octave Fuzz that was fun....
I played the same amp for 15 years (self consumed) so my ears (and mind) are just starting to open up to other cool stuff.......

Yeah, I gotta tell ya...
I never really thought about using the computer as a guitar rig,,,,but now that I've heard your recordings, it's on my list of MUST do's
Especially if all that fun stuff is built in!.....
Again, whatever it takes to keep me playing guitar.....somedays it's nylon string,,,,then I see Madison with a lap steel and I break mine out,,,,,then I hear Geezer doing a cool amp demo,,,and I'm thinkin D'Mar's.......this SITE has done GREAT things for ME!

Now I'm kinda mad that I ever put it down,,,,but, it's like ridin a bike,,,so I'll be OK

HI HO SILVER  :l2: Sorry about that, Posted this http://www.el34world.com/Forum/index.php?topic=13446.0 awhile back and also thought it OK but can be a little boring. As for the mud, he's playing through an Ampeg bass amp, so i guess that MUD is his thing.  :icon_biggrin:

Yeah,....I had never heard of him......but, I haven't been payin attention.....I think the last blues show I was at was Albert Collins right before he died (1993).....wow I didn't know it had been that long,,,and I'm lyin,,,I've seen Buddy Guy since then

If I was out there trying to do blues I would want to convey the same type of MOOD,,,,,,,and as I'm learning in my new amp build,,,,it's a fine line between tight, heavy, thick bass and mud
As for the mud, he's playing through an Ampeg bass amp, so i guess that MUD is his thing.  :icon_biggrin:
Thinking back,,,,,it's probably been the bass in my sound that has kept me out of the mix on occasion....I love it when I'm setting my sound up alone, but then put it in the band context and I was getting washed out......
But I just love the feel of those thicker strings and all of the fat goodnees you can coax out of 'em....Billy Gibbons has always been one of my influences

This must be on his pedalboard, and it sounds like the effect that stood out to me as kinda cool:

MXR Slash Octave Fuzz
