B.A.M.B.A.
« on: November 25, 2012, 05:01:10 pm »
My friend called this project BAMBA...Big Ass Mother$%#@ Bass Amp.

I rebuilt and modified this Traynor YBA-3 Custom Special.

Been working on it/studying it for a while now.  Little here little there when time permited.  I finished it a few weeks ago and have been putting it to use and enjoying it quite a bit.

I have always wanted a bass amp for my setup and now I have just what I wanted.

Super clean, super big bass. Very versatile bass amp tone.

I changed the tubes from 6ca7/el34's to 6550's.

Rebuilt the circuit.

Modified the power section a bit.

Cleaned it up.

Decided this amp needed an SVT 8x10 cabinet to make it sing, so I traded a custom microphone preamp I built years ago straight up for it.

Awesome. How do you like those Tung-Sol reissues? I love them in my Audio Research
home stereo, but I have not tried them in the bass amp.

I love big bass tube amps... Most people want one only after they hear them, you can never
really convince a player to have you build one for them until they have heard it.

Not to steal the thread, but I love huge ridiculous bass amps, here is one I built for a friend of mine who
makes guitars. He wanted it nasty, no nice face plates, no good looks, no markings on the front. I just
scribbled the notes on the top plate... this is how he wanted it.
Four 6550s in the output, it can use KT88, KT90, KT100, KT120 also. Two channel, you can switch
between or use both. 4/8/16 ohm out and line-out. I built two cabs that he uses at the same time,
a single 18" and a 4x10 cab.

Here are two pics, note the huge output tranny. It can pass 20hz at 240Watts.

I made one @ a year ago a lot like what you have there, 4-6550s with a BF bassman channel (nice for guitar) and an Ampeg B-25b channel. It needs tweaking but sounds great! I used a Twin Reverb PT and a 100w Marshall OT, which is big but not like triode's! It was the biggest OT I could afford.

It's running through either 1 or 2 1x15 ported cabs that I may wind up rebuilding.

Very nice build!

Cool, thanks for sharing your bass amp!

I really like the tung-sol 6550's, very nice and clean. Love looking at them too.

I agree there is just something special about a BIG BASS AMP!

The iron on this yba-3 is massive.  I tossed around the idea of using kt120's also but went with the 6550's in the end.

Here is a before pic and of the iron.

Cool, I may have to have my friend try them.

I really wonder if your amp uses the same output tranny, it sure looks like it (mine is a
MQ451, which is a Acrosound/Dynaco A-451). It is a very nice output.

Thanks.

My transformers are Hammond's.
I think they are:
OT: 1650T
PT: 278CX

This is my best guess because there are no identifying numbers on them, I know they are Hammond's though.

As usual, excellent job man.
Congrats!  :worthy1:

I have stopped being surprised at the guitar player who spends $3,000 on the latest boutique amplifier, and plugs in his Mexican Stratocaster strung with light gauge strings through a Big Muff Pi fuzz pedal.
