Best way to clean a dirty chassis

I have an old chassis I'm going to clean up and I was wondering what some of you guys have used to clean up/restore some of the nastier ones you've had to deal with.

It's got a little oxidation, not much, but it needs to come off. I started using a dremel for little rust spots but the stainless steel wire brushes they sell don't get much done before they are spent. I find it pitiful that they're that whimpy.

The tranny covers need to be cleaned/polished/oxidation removed.

40 years of gunk, dust, and crud.

Normally I would leave it be but this amp needs to be restored properly or the rust and buildup on the metal is going to get too severe.

Thoughts? Experience?

Don't touch laminations of the transformers also if are rusty, just paint it
