Larry Carlton & gold top Les Paul
« on: February 08, 2013, 05:35:59 am »
I think this is some of the most remarkable sweetest musical sustain that I've heard Larry get on a tune. Never seen him play a gold top Les Paul before.

Beautiful song.

beautiful stuff Tnit.....here's my favorite goldtop player from a concert done at the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame in 2006....there's a dvd somewhere with the whole concert. I saw it once about 4 yrs ago. It's worth it's weight in GOLD if you can find one, grab it!  Sorry, I don't know how to link the open frame ala Larry above, so here's the url link.....worth the time to watch.

WOW T,    :notworthy:
Now that's what I'm talking about!!!.......
That's the sustain into harmonic feedback thing that just makes me wanna cry,,,,, man that's awesome!!

Wish I could see what's at his feet, and how his volume pedal control is tied into his rig
When I think of why I would want to do a D style amp ---THAT IS WHY
That's the tone that a billion guitarists hear in their head .....and the control we all wish we had

Thanks for posting that, and reminding me again why I'm here!

I found this:
http://www.mr335.tv/?videofile=mr335/interview/335tv_pedalboard&channel=rig

And this:
Each input has a dedicated volume pedal. The acoustic volume pedal is the Ernie Ball on the far left; it has “in,” “out” and “tuner out” options. The electric volume pedal is a Sho-Bud that was modified by Alexander Dumble and is centered exactly on the board. The pedal was originally designed to be a volume controller for pedal steel guitars, and has a smooth feel and great accuracy. Alexander brilliantly installed a small 9V circuit board, which boosts the highs proportionately to the output level; typically Sho-Buds tend to lose highs in that process.

Here's an approach that helped me alot with getting a harmonic out of any note on the fretboard...
Larry's technique isn't as obvious, BUT it's very similar to what Steve demonstrates in this video...(see 5:40 in Larry's video-your 1st post)
I have been using this technique for years, after watching an early Morse video, and although it does require some practice, it can become second nature after a while....I like the way he exagerates the technique to really give you a great example of what's happening there...
Watch closely and let me know if you've seen this before....
Good luck and have fun!!

Ha, I know 3 of the guys in that band

That's Dangerous Dan Toler on guitar. I have done a bunch of amp work for him. Monstser player but Dickie did not like Dan much. Suprised to see them together on the stage.

The keyboard guy looks like Mike Koch. Hard to tell with the hat and I have not seen him in 13 years

And of course Dickie, did a bunch of amp work for him

yeah, cool. I like that Toler guy's work alot too. I've seen some other concert stuff with Dickey doing guitar duets with a much younger guy with dark long hair....don't know who he is but he's top notch too.
I like the way they produce that Allman Bro sound to a T and it seems like they never miss a note.....great musical stuff for the generations to come to be able to see.

Dangerous Dan is a monster player

I took an silver face twin reverb and put an effects loop in it for him plus some other tweaks
It came out great and he loved it

Sad part is that he did not have two nickels to rub together
There's alot of great players out there that live the poor as dirt musicians life

< didn't have two nickels > That is a sad reality. Entertainment at any level is risky. Either your feelings get hurt when only 8 people show up to a gig at the local coffee shop, or you find out after touring for thirty yrs. you owe a couple mill to the IRS. Joni Mitchell, one of my favs, never was shy about exposing the grotesque underbelly of the music industry. She said, "you know I'd go back there tomorrow, but for the role I've taken on, stoking the star making machinery behind the popular song."

thanks for sharing your memories.

Thanks again for posting this...I've listened to it at least once a day since you put it up....really inspirational

Are you thinking about getting your hands on a Les Paul ? .....this made me break mine out and re-string it and try to get "the feel" back
I put it down in 2000 after herniating 2 discs in my back.....just too heavy for 3 sets a night.....BUT, nothing else I have ever owned sounds near as good
Do you own any guitars with humbuckers?,,,,I've only ever seen the Tele's,,,and they are beautiful!

speaking of 'heavy' Pauls, Billy Gibbons has many as you all know, but he doesn't tour with his collectibles the way I hear it. In one article I read he had bought 3 or 4 sunburst models that look like his original Pearly Gates '59. But, before he brings them home he has them routed out to lighten them up so they don't blow out his back. I'm sure there is some inside secrets as to how Gibson does that now? I know they make production models that go into stores that are already routed out. That sounds radical I suppose and you may not ever entertain such notions, but it's out there if you want to go deeper?

And by bumping it, I hope more guys get a chance to see it.......really inspirational tone and phrasing for all of us that are working at this.....priceless

Hey T, check out this version...
Right at 0:18 he uses that harmonic approach that I mentioned above....

It looks like he learned how to incorporate it without having to point his finger out in the Les Paul video,,,and that has a lot to do with where he is placing his pick hand on the LP

The trick is that your pick hand finger touches 12 frets above where you are fretting the note with your left hand,,,,and enables you to create a harmonic out of any note.....nice

I hold the pick between my middle finger and thumb, and reach my first finger out to touch lightly on the fret as I pluck the string with the pick......a little tricky, but worth the effort.....that's exactly what you see him do at 0:18

Thanks again for turning me onto one of my all-time favorite guitar instrumentals....I could listen to this for hours

Thanks for re-posting, been wanting to see what the hubbub was. worth the wait. If you're not hip to him, check out Lenny Breau on harp harmonics on utube.....just a sick, make you want to donate your guitar to charity kind of player. come to think of it, L.C. is too.

one of the stompbox sites has a guys chronicle of his adding pre-amp to volume pedal.   Ernie Ball one I think,   looked pro when done. Been meaning to do to my stereo E.Ball, as they do cut a little top off. maybe 2 Ep preamps, or 1 ep, 1? in one pedal. free up room on board

I use one Vol. in front, and one Vol. in back (end) of FX.

At end of FX it's like master vol---all the crunch of boxes,   no change in tone,   well only in that interaction of dirt box to amp. much more notice when volume pedal is in front end, like one on guitar. Then it cleans up as you turn down, for anybody that might be coming in to this late.

Also, heard a guy nailing Larry Carl-Tone, w/Fuchs. Guy wasn't that great of a player, but was copping that early Mr.335 tone.
1 of the keys is a light touch on picking hand, w/occasional firm strokes   and an alternately slippery-glissando and precise style of fretting hand. Same technique as used in the painting of the Sistine Chapel. You know,...no biggie!.
keep on with those scales and that fish is gonna die, if it don't bite you first!

never fried a tranny ..till I built a dim bulb tester. UPDATE-haven't fried anything since learning how to properly build & use one...thanks Uncle Doug, & el34 World
