I've got a real 63 vibroverb that needs some original caps
« on: April 20, 2013, 02:29:59 pm »
I have a real 63 vibroverb on the bench and the guy wants to restore it to stock specs. It has all orange drop coupling caps!!
The rest of the amp is stock including speakers but some dodo changed the coupling caps awhile back.
Does anyone have any blue mallory's and some brown turds that they used in the 63 vibroverb?

I have these if they will work. I recall the brown crap ones were really brown and looked like racoon droppings!  :l2:
The blue molded ones are going to be harder to find. I only have (2) of the blue molded ones left. They are .047 in value

They all test good for there capacitance values. I havent checked them for any DC leakage yet

(5) .1
(4) .022
(1) .047

I thought the brown caps appeared starting in the late 60's.

Part of why people assume they're bad is they showed up in silverface amps when Fender stopped using the molded blue caps. Or am I remembering this wrong?

No I think your remembering it right.

But that in and of itself doesn't mean their bad sounding caps. Their were other things going on in those amps that where killing the sound in some of those amps, like grid suppression caps. I'm not saying anything new to you or the forum.

According to Dan Torres in his book, the brown turds have high ESR from new, and usually function fine, but just about anything is better sounding. Personally I've never seen a non-functioning brown turd cap, but just about anything does seem to sound better. I have checked the ESR on a couple before throwing them away and they were rather high compared to most other plastic caps.

I haven't seen the brown turds in the earlier blackface stuff....usually a bunch of the blue molded's and a couple orange drops, or sometimes the later blue caps show up too in the pre-CBS stuff. Some ceramics in there too.

Greg

P.S. I bet the blue molded's were gone because a previous tech took them all out, told the customer they were bad, and sold them on ebay....

I have had outstanding sounding amp with all brown turds in it.I have changed them out thinking what you do but the tone didn't improve so they went back in.
