New 5E3 Head in Progress
« on: May 30, 2013, 05:46:52 pm »
This is identical almost to the 5E3 Head (TE Deluxe) that I did a couple of years ago. It will be just like the pix below(old one) of the beige/green one picture except the new one will have a black cage and white chassis. No "5E3" marking on the front. It will have the original circuit except the first two caps on the preamp stages will be .022 instead of .1. My Son got the first one so I'm planning on hanging on to this one to play with it a little bit and then might sell it.

I had to re-educate myself on how that 5E3 tone stack works. I did some searching on the net regarding this tone stack and the best explinations "Hands Down"  :worthy1: is the description and diagram the Sluckey provided back a couple of years ago. There is no better explination than this post on reply #4:
http://www.el34world.com/Forum/index.php?topic=10386.0

I'll post some pictures soon of the new white/black one but for a refernce here is a shot of the first one. Not fancy at all, kind of industrial looking:>)Platefire

Yep, Hammon Chassis not powder coated but comes gray primed. The paint is rustodiam professional grade spray can, I'm afraid any fault(powder effect) is in the hands of the installer:>) Let me re-interate that what you see in the previous pictures was done two years ago. The current one is black cage and with white chassis. I took it to a musician friend who also has an auto body shop and had him paint them.

Regarding the cage/chassis, I've always loved those vintage PA heads with the perforated cage cover and thought it cool that Hammond made a new version of that that comes with cage, chassis and chassis bottom plate. So vintage circuit in a vintage looking head---couldn't be all bad! Plate

Yeah...right.
I have seen those at CE.
Your Green chassis is quite handsome.
I will have to give that a try in the near future.
Well Done and Thank You   :worthy1:

One thing that's really confusing using these hammond cages/chassis and going by an old original
fender schematic, because the opening & cover plate is on the bottom putting the chassis opening on the bottom instead of the top like normal---you have to set up the board turrets and wire up the board opposite hand than the original fender 5E3. See pix! This is your install view--So you wire the board oppisite hand and then when you put the cover on the bottom of the chassis and flip it over for normal operation--then it's correct. Your board is actually hanging up-side-down like a bat for normal operation.

Notice the seperate board view, the ground turrets/connections are on the top so when it's flipped to operational position will be ajacent to pots. Something to consider if you use this chassis/cage combination---any schematic you go by will have to be built opposite hand.

This can really throw you off during installation---I have to keep double checking to keep myself staight. Platefire

Why? Are you superstitious? Think it will sound too Marshally if the input jacks are on the right?

So that why Marshal did that, they was copying fender in that type of chassis and was too lazy to change it over the right way :icon_biggrin:

Fender chassis hand and Marshall's are tubes up. Tubes up is a superior from a design standpoint. No need to reverse a layout to build an amp either way!

Phsyco

The difference is I'm using turrets instead of an eyelet board. With the old fender arrangement with the chassis opening on top(tubes down) the turrets are pointing up. On this Hammond cage/chassis arrangment that I'm using more like a Marshall chassis arrangement(tubes up) the board is in the same position but the turrets are pointing down. If you want to maintain that old 5E3 front panel layout using these chassis parts like I did using a turret board, your going to have to build the board like my example for it to come out right. I was saying that for J Rindt's benifit in case he should build one like mine. Like you said, if you like a Marshall type front layout you can go that way. I have never owned a Marshall or used one, so my brain is fender slanted :dontknow:

sluckey---is that some of your Marshall builds--looks great! Guess I need to do a Marshall build to overcome my fear of "right input syndrom"  :help:   Plate
