How about good brand transformers?
« on: June 14, 2013, 10:27:34 am »
I see Hoffman carries their own line of transformers. Anyone suggest others? What are some things that I will loose or gain depending upon my transformer choice?

It is my opinion that any well built/designed piece of iron will probably be good 99% of the time.

Simply choose the voltages you want and make sure it can supply the correct amount of current you need for a project.

Heyboer
Mercury Magnetics
Hammond

These are the one's I frequently use around my shop.

Some will lighten your wallet more than others.

2204 build.

I just built a 2204 clone using Classic Tone transformers from Magnetic Components in Chicago. I am very pleased with the way it sounds. Hard to distinguish from a real JCM 800. I bought a Sovtek Mig60 (essentially a JCM 800 clone) that had previously had the transformers replaced with Mercury Magnetics iron and it sounds really good, too. You can buy an entire set of Magnetic Components iron (including shipping) for less than what one MM transformer costs. I doubt I could tell the difference between MC and MM iron in identical builds. I could definitely tell the difference in my checkbook.
Some of the most amazing music in history was made with equipment that's not as good as what you own right now.
