You get what you pay for.  Stick with companies who sell the good stuff (Allparts, WD, Stew Mac, etc.)

Agreed.  A cheap guitar might still be a good husk.  If so it can be improved with better parts.  But why replace substandard parts with other cheap parts?

I have looked at GFS parts and wondered the same thing. I have a cheap strat copy that plays really well but has the cheap ceramic pickups--but the nice action up the neck and feel warrents better pickups and electronics IMHO. I hate to invest too much in the parts because I only paid $20.00 for the guitar. It does have a solid maple body--kind of unusual body wood for strat but at least not plywood.

I've been looking at the Scatter Wound alinco V strat pickups that seem real cheap for all your getting but I've been fooled before:) Take a look at this link to that e-bay item and I'd like to hear what you think????? For this guitar I want something of an improvement but not overkill. I also would be interested in anybody with experiance with guitarfetish parts--I'm still shopping for the right thing. Want to make it somewhat of a quack-master and think the pickups in the 6K range will be good for that.   Platefire

I've gotten some stuff from them, it seems to be of Korean manufacture: alpha pots (metric),  switches, a very nice roller bridge. They have a LP switch,  pot and jack kit for Epiphone Les Pauls that's a pretty good deal for $25. I wouldn't use their stuff on an American guitar.  I'm leery of their necks- it's hard enough to get a good one for $150, I can well imagine what a $47 neck would be.  I'd consider a body from them if I was building an experimental Strat or Tele.  A good choice for parts for upgrading an Chinese guitar.  They aren't as fast as Doug though- orders usually take two or three days to be processed, plus shipping time.

thanks P Batty et al,
that about what i figured. yeah, i wouldn't dream of ordering a neck or body from them, but maybe for some not-so-critical parts once in a while. pickups have become so expensive (for me, anyway) that i'm especially curious about their $30-$40 pups - might be crap - *shrug*
thx

I've ordered from GFS a number of times. I actually rather like their Fat Pat humbucking pickups. I have a set in an old 70s Ibanez Les Paul copy. They were blowing them out cheap at the time so I gave them a try. I liked them so much I also put one in the neck of my favorite 1989 Epiphone Les Paul Custom (I have three). I have purchased three sets of their no name tuning keys and all have worked just as well as any set of Grover keys I have purchased. They ship fast and their prices are reasonable. I'll shop with them again if they happen to have something I need.

thx alerich, good to know.

i've got an old ibanez LP myself ('77) that i've totally swiped parts from for my SG (which came to me very broken with no parts at all). in fact, i've got a few lyin around with either missing or really crappy pups. hmm...

A GFS post script: I just finished a guitar project and used the GFS VEH pickup (Vintage Extra Hot) - 11.2K with A5 magnets. Their spin on an Eddie Van Halen inspired pickup or whatever. I put it in a Fender Strat. Single bridge pickup with a maple neck. Single 500K volume control.  This pickup is great - sensational rock tone. A bit hotter than a Duncan 59 but has a slightly ragged edge that I really like. The maple neck may be contributing to that. Probably sounds pretty good into a clean amp but I can't tear it away from my rock rig long enough to find out. $35.

I have used a few Asian pickups from Dragonfire and they were only real OK to me. I do like the DF alnico Strat pickups, however. This is the fourth GFS pickup I have bought (three Fat Pats and this VEH). I have been extremely pleased with all of them. I am a long time Duncan and/or Gibson pickup user. The Duncan JB is still my all time favorite pickup. That said, I really like what I have bought from GFS so far.

I have heard some great $200 boutique pickups and I have heard $200 boutique pickups that just made me yawn. I've bought inexpensive pickups that were a waste of money and I've bought inexpensive pickups that kicked ass. I have yet to see a direct correlation between cost and quality that holds true in every single case.

I was doing some experimenting with an Epi SG type and I used one of the GFS P90 pups that comes in a standard humbucker size. It fit right into the cavity and works very well with excellent tone. I bought a set of their Strat single coils with the 'vintage alnico' mags a couple yrs ago. Loved the woody tone but the output was too low. I should try them again with my clean boost pedal I recently acquired?

I got one of their fatboy tele pickups and I think it sounds fine.I have guitars with duncans and dimarzio's that I don't think sound any better.
I got some of their wilkinson tuners for a cheap project and I would have no problems using them on a more expensive guitar.

I got a tele control plate too.It was nice and thick and the plating looked good.
There are places to get the same hardware cheaper
