wireless mics & interference
« on: September 05, 2013, 04:12:48 am »
1st time on other stuff. got friends at Elks Lodge, having probs w/ wireless setup. seems they have 2/3 hand held mics, one lavaliere, so 3 or 4 total.
usually only run one at a time. large hall, 3 different stations.

having troubles. i'm going to see if I can lend a hand, see if the mics are ok, see how far they are running them, (distance), if there is interference from neon or?, what ac they have hooked up to, what freqs the mics are, and whatever anyone might think I should check out. sounds like interference, not feedback.

says person talks, stops turns off mic, hands to next speaker, who turns on, speaks. in between, says they go nuts, noise jump out of nowhere. he is familiar w/feedback, from movies, and other speaking engagements, says this is not that. there are many fire & law folks there, possible iterference from their gear?, they are plainclothes. going to go there in next few days, (or tomorrow), of course they need fixed by next tuesday!.

any suggestions?. help would be very appreciated. thanks!

Hi S&P, did you find out anything on this?

Wireless systems have a number of possibilities. Check the gain and squelch trimmers on both the mics and receiver units. Yes, they have a distance issue which one is a symptom that you describe here. Also weak/low batteries give these kind of issues too. Similar to chordless phones also but phones don't have the user trims & controls that wireless mic & guitar equipment does. Other remote possibilities would be contact issues within the equiment w/ other things seemingly in good shape.

I got $105 for few hrs...the setup was archaic, but probably big time when they installed new. I shot cleaner in some stuck pots, found the system running, and come to find out they  possibly never/often don't shut off the ''PA''! this stuff is what? 30 yrs. old. I've been in studios where engineer said they don't shut off stuff so it stays constant-temp wise, not hot, then cooled down, (repeatedly).

Turned out main  problem seemed to be combo of Li-ion going bad on one, the people that set up mics weren't aware of telescopic nature of antennae, (they didn't fully extend), and biggest problem---a loose antennae. When jiggled, the connection would short/open. The mics were newer almost Karaoke like- $150 +,-, for a set of 2 in a small 1/2  rack, and they had 2 sets (4mics) total.      I brought 'em back to house/shop to fix, and was surprised at range--

We had Yard sale that weekend, and I hooked em up to some Fender ss amps I put out on grass, & the wife played huckster, while I bit the head off chickens, and could walk 1/2 way down block and still  hear clearly. photos of Elks Lodge custom light/PA board
