Giving an old Cab some TLC
« on: September 16, 2013, 03:09:44 am »
Hi guys, The cab that came with the Fi Sonic is the original that was sold with the Head. There is not a lot of info other than a few pics, but that was all I needed.
As I said the cab had a lot of screw holes, a few small tears and the usual corners starting to peel away.
No grille cloth, no feet and the two handles also gone.
The speakers were wired in series(both speakers are 15ohm).
Baffle board shoot as well as back board.

Because the tolex was defiled, I had thoughts of building a new cab to the same specs but the tolex is no longer made.
SO, I tried to repair the damage with a good result, so keeping the original cab was a good idea.
The repairs were done with several tubes of SUPER GLUE.
The screw holes were filled with tooth pix and super glue, what this did was harden the chipboard enough to tap with a flattened copper soldering tip to be able to flatten out the raised edges of the chipboard and at the same time push the tolex back over the hole. The tolex at this point was a little frayed so by topping the tolex with the super glue harden the surface. I washed the whole cab with warn washing up detergent and wiped down with clean water and a soft cloth.I used a vinyl spray paint to touch up the holes and a few scuff marks.
This treatment did not hide the holes completely but I don't want it to look new as it is not.
The grille cloth is nowhere near the same as the original but looks good, the handles being as old as they are, I thought I would have trouble finding (thank god for the internet) and tracked down some from a local supplier at a staggering cost of $3.02 each, he also had a jack plate and four rubber feet  :icon_biggrin:
Two pieces of MDF for the baffle and back boards.
Rewired the speakers to 8ohn and all is done. Thanks  :icon_biggrin:
