old heathkit stereo amplifier find

A friend just found an old heathkit stereo amplifier.It looks like it may be the first they ever offered.
 It has a tone of tubes in it and huge transformers.
  Wonder if it's worth anything? It looks to be in good condition.

Cool! I bought an old mono dual 6V6 power amp on eBay built from a kit. The company was called Hi Fi. It had all the original tubes and the original booklet with the schematic, layout and instructions. You could see where the builder checked off each step in pencil. The PT date code shows 39th week of 1962. I ended up gutting it and building a clone of a Marshall Studio 15 in it. I replaced the puny OT with a Magnetic Components Deluxe replacement. Fun project.

I've kinda stayed clear of the stereo amps because the PT is oversized to run two power amps and that makes a mis-match for the OT's converting it to a mono guitar amp. I played in stereo before and that was cool but I'm not interested in going there anymore. So the way I look at it, on old stereo amps if the price is really low, I would buy it for the parts factor but if they had a heafty price on it, forget it! Plate

These are potentially big fetish items, so I would definitely investigate the potential selling price on ebay before tearing the thing apart. These amps can go for $300 in "ugh" condition up to $600 for rebuilt. If you're talking about getting a pair of trannies and a choke and a couple of so-so output tubes and a bare chassis (that you'll have to do plenty more work to make "ampable") it's arguably better to sell it and buy some kind of amp (or, buy amp parts of your choosing)

I should talk, I guess. I got this Pilot SA-232 stereo some time ago for free. (I insisted on giving the fellow who gave it to me $20)
 



Really nice, oversized transformers. Amp is in pretty nice shape, but kind of covered with wax from blown up caps and the like. Anyway...I am doing a bare-chassis restoration. Tube sockets were...fragile, semi-scorched looking. The thing runs/ran hot. I should (have) probably just sold it, but it's a nice little package with the perforated cover and these are highly regarded.

Some time ago I got a Radio Craftsman 500 mono amp for $25 and I sold it for $685. It had a museum-grade matched pair of Genalex KT-66 that were just awesome. Within 1/2 mil of each other. Nice amp, but I really did not want to go hunting for another.
