Trivia time:
Im sure the Satch fans know this, but many dont know that when Ritchie Blackmore quit DP in '93, in the middle of the Battle Rages On tour, they gave Joe a call. First he turned them down (through his agent) based on some old advice from Steve Vai to never be a hired gun. After about an hour thinking about the opportunity to play with one of his fav all time legendary bands growing up, he called his agent back in a panic asking if he had told them yet. He just laughed and said, I knew you would call me back! He did the European and Japanese legs and said it was the best time he ever had playing with anyone and the band felt the same. They asked him to join, but his contract prevented it and his career was just taking off. Plus he could not get past the "Ghost of Ritchie". What a shame!!!! To think where they would be today! Instead they got that...that OTHER guy....
Joe Satriani - The Ghost of Ritchie Blackmore (8 of 11)Sammy was always HUGE in St. Louis, even going back to the old days with Montrose. Sammy opened for Boston back in '78 on the Don't Look Back tour. St. Louis brought him back for FOUR arena lights on encores. Sammy came out and said Tom Scholz told him to get his butt back out there and make your fans happy. That is REALLY cool for a headliner to do something like that. I forgot what the final song was, but Tom came out and jammed with him. I think it was Led Zep, Rock and Roll. The place was going bonkers. Then Boston came on and played for almost three hours - just an amazing night. During this tour Gary Pihl, Sammy's guitarist, became good friends with Tom Scholz. Gary is now the longest member of Boston, behind Tom, from Third Stage on.
Michael Anthony, the most awesome backup singer in the history of Rock. Joe doing Jon Lord's solo! That was AWESOME! Ritchie's solo! Priceless! They did DP proud on that one!
