Tried to search the archives, etc., and turned up nmothing on the brown era Deluxe. Anyone have impressions on this model? Good? Bad? Somewhere in between? Thanks! Craig

Awsome. I built a clone. It is perfect for Rockabilly type sound a la Brian Setzer. I use it with my DeArmond T-400 hollowbody. It breaks up between 4 and 6 with just the right amount of crunch and compression.

I also use it with my Strat with Lindy Fralin Pups. Good for blues and SRV type sounds.

The tremolo is excellent too (bias vary type), very deep without clicking.

I've used it with several echos, the latest being the Echodrive and with a '65 Fender Stand alone reverb and it sounds good.

I've also tried a couple of overdrive pedals, but didn't like how they sounded. The amp works better using the volume pot of your guitar for boosting gain.

Try it, you'll like it.

Just to relate my own story about one of these:

About 12 years ago a bass player friend of mine had a Brown Deluxe that his father picked up at a garage sale. It was in mint condition and all original. It had been an export model because it had a german music store's boiler plate on the rear panel.

Anyway, the blow out garage sale price on this beauty was $8.

Why doesn't that kind of luck ever happen to me?

If you are going to build a clone, pay close attention to the PT you buy. If you get a Brown Deluxe PT copy, it may have higher B+ than the schematic indicates due to the current wall 120vac instead of the 110vac from the late 50s. I had Mercury Magnetics make a Brown Deluxe PT to give me the right B+ to match the 6G3 schematic (375vdc off the rectifier). You could also just have Ted Weber make up a Z cap to drop the B+ (I didn't know this at the time). If I remember right, the Brown Deluxe PT gave me ~430vdc out of the box. I put the unit on a variac at 110vac and sure enough the B+ dropped to the 375vdc range. So I had them make one to adjust (It was actually cheaper).

Hope this helps.

Um, this PT puts out right at 405 off a 5AR4, under load. Hey, that's a great idea getting a customer-spec copper cap! I've also got a big fat 5R4 here, too.

Just wondered about the typical complaints people have about the 5E3 being "farty" or like a blanket is thrown over the speaker. Put another way, assuming I were to put a 5E3 and a 6G3 side-by-side, waht would my impressions be? Thanks again for the responses! Craig

I think it will have a bit to do with the speaker. I've tried a P12R, P12Q and C12N Weber with the 6G3. The last two were better than the P12R in terms of punch. I haven't played a 5E3.

 de-farting the 5E3

If you want to get rid of that flabby low end just change the preamp cathode resistor/cap combo. Try a 2.6k resistor with a .22 mfd cap. You can keep the other channel stock and compare the difference although you have to separate the two halves of the 12AX7. I did this in a clone and found that I never use the stock channel at all now.

 Tyranocaster,

I split the cathodes as well, but went with the 25/25 cap and 3300 resistors to keep it relatively stock sounding. Could you make the cap change on the second common gain stage instead and get the same result?

Well, if you have already split the cathodes, why not try one of them with the stock values and try the other with the de-farted values. Yes, it will change the sound, but if it's farty you WANT to change the sound, right? I have never tried it on the second gain stage so I can't answer your question, sorry.

I haven't had a problem with "farty" sound from the 5E3, but it definitely has loads of bass and mids.

I haven't tried the 6G3 Deluxe either, but I used to own a brown Princeton. The amp was much brighter, and a sonic transition betweentweed and blackface sounds. The Oxford speaker that was stock in my amp probably didn't help.
