 Fender Twin AMp 5D8 project
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hey guys I'm thinking about building my first tube amp and I've got some questions. I downloaded all the schematics I could find for it and I am in the process of pricing all the components to see what this project might cost me. One thing that I am having trouble finding is the Transformer, any idea on where I might look? Another thing is I printed out the Layout for the circutry which at first looked pretty straight forward, but now is a bit confusing. I am looking on the left and where the wires are coming off the 5Y3GT socket that is second from the left, where are they going? To a transformer? I'll put the two pictures that I am working with up. Any other suggestions for a first timer?

Thanks,

 hello,

I can't get the links to work, can you try to post them again?

...but the tube rectifier socket will have four wires that connect to it from the power transformer, two wires are HT and two are 5V heaters for the tube. If you are looking at the 5D8, this amp has two rectifiers in parallel, so your transformer will need to be adequate to supply the extra heater current to the added rectifier.

Is this the link hereFender 5D8

did this help?

Aren't there a lot of tubes for not to much amp in this one?

On the bottom of the left a note say "earlier models have one 5U4G in place of two 5Y3" - that would at least give you the possibility to use a easy available PT, like the TBPT.

Well, the Tweed Twin *is* pretty inefficient in its use of tubes. The main difference between the 5D8 and the classic lower power Twin 5E8A circuit is the paraphase inverter in the 5D8, versus the split load driver in the 5E8A phase inverter. And of course, the dual 5Y3s instead of dual 5U4s.

For that reason, you could use the Mojo Hi-power tweed twin power transformer, which can support the low power Twin as well, and, come to that, the Mojo low-power tweed twin output transformer. I don't know if the 5D8 and 5E8 had the same OT, but it's a good bet. The output stage is the same.

One other tip: use real 6L6G or GA tubes. They're lower power than 6L6GCs, they look cool, and they sound great. Used ones show up often on eBay and are pretty reasonable.
