This interview was about a year before his death.  Judging his demeanor, I don't think he knew of the cancer at that time.  This is a very laid back interview where he talks freely about his development of the Hammond sound of the "Beast", his sonic sparring with Ritchie, and his "earned" reputation as a soloist that drove him to it all.  I think it is probably the most insightful interview I have ever seen from him.  He was obviously at peace with leaving Deep Purple and happy with what he was doing.  Good to know that he was doing what he loved at the end.

Thanks Jim.  Man, I sure am glad I had the opportunity to see most of the legends.  He proved a Hammond does not have to have a leslie as they scream and honk through Marshalls.

Yeah, I saw them in '73 right before Gillan and Glover left.  They were the loudest band I've ever seen/heard.  They cleared out some folks in the front rows as Ritchie's stacks and Jon's PA cabs were screaming floor level which was ear level to all sitting on the floor.  Roger's bass was thundering, but bearable.  They had that rare magic of being able to read each other like ESP during the jams.  They would span rock, jazz, blues, classical, and even Ritchie doing his pseudo cello rolling the volume control - all in the same song.  They were unbelievable.  And Gillans voice back then was without peer, I still say the best that ever was.  Saw Rainbow twice, Sabbath with Gillan, and the DP reunion in 85.  And what doesnt count was DP version IXVIIGCII with Arie and Morse, a pale shadow of their former greatness.
