Hi - Fi stereo project needed
« on: February 18, 2014, 09:27:05 am »
Hi, I'd like to build a stereo amplifier ( or 2 X mono ) with tubes easy to find. There are a couple of schems on the net but I don't want to invest money in an amplifier that doesn't sound right. Does someone of you have a good schem ?

Thank s

Colas

I would consider the Dynaco amps. Common tubes and all parts are available.
A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

No, but these people do. They also have parts. May I recommend the Mark III model?

I saw the dynaco schematics, very well explained. Theres is no trannies specs though...only model numbers and I'd like to use the transformers I have in stock already. Thanks for the info, I'll get back to you.

Sure there are. Triode has very detailed transformer specs for all the Dynaco amps.

what kind of wattage output are you looking for?

I have a Telefunken Hymnus Stereo '58 5014.  It is a console stereo with lots of tubes for the AM/FM and shortwave, but the power amp is 2 EL84's and a 12AX7. (I use the "tape" input to route line level in)...  There were a lot of similar SE mono amps in radios during the 50's, but they are low wattage output.  my Telefunken sounds fantastic, but it isn't loud.

Of course, you'll have less  power supply noise issues with a push-pull design,  and the cost is probably marginal to add a couple of tubes...

I have 3 Mark III.  Love them.  2 are original iron and one is using the Triode set.  They are very nice.  The Transformers are huge.  Plate voltage gets up to the point where I have series all filter caps.

They create a great soundstage.  I buy from Triode and they are very helpful Monday-Thursday.  No one is there on Friday.

the prob I have is the price too. Two MKIII come to 1100$.  ( tubes included or not, I'd have to find out ) Customs: 300 $ delivery : ??????? taxes ??????

With the schem and the trannies specs, it may cost me 400 $ or less: caps. sockets and tubes, the rest I have.

That's a big part of the cost. I assume you have UL transformers?

Something else to consider... The Mark III is only a power amp. Gonna need an expensive preamp to hear what that amp can do. Big pair of Klipsch or Voice of the Theater too.

Money, money!

Sluckey, you are killing me.  You got me to thinking about the price of my trip to the moon.  I am really liking the canadian speakers Paradigm.  I was considering a tube driven surround for my media center, but I like nice stuff.  I stayed with a nice Yamaha SS receiver after about 1 minute of adding it all up.

I still have vinyl and 2 thorens (sp?) turntables.  A friend of mine's son came in the house the other day and asked me if I were a DJ.  I am fighting getting old, but it happens anyway. :help:

The cost of entry is keeping me from doing a normal hi-fi setup, even though I already have the MC-30's. Speakers, preamp, good sources, lack of room & a 2-year-old nix the normal setup.

Instead, I went for some high-end planar magnetic headphones, a DAC and headphone amp. Still expensive, but a fraction of the cost of the big setup, and I can listen in my apartment at any time of day or night.

I just finished a quad se el84 mono block that to old ears sounds very good,  Verified by a handful of discerning friends. I run a stereo to mono input, a 4ohm OT (edcor) and use 2 8-ohm audio nirvana 8"ers in 3' cabs, their design. It is cap coupled though since the moon is way to pricey. Workin on the pre-amp section now from Sluckey's rockola re-work.  My living room is 20'x20' with 12' ceiling and nobody likes it past 7...except me and my friends that like green beer!!
Went Class C for efficiency
