Remote pedal switching help needed
« on: March 06, 2014, 07:15:38 pm »
Hi Guys

New to the forum.

Keith Vonderhulls from BYOC sent me over.

I am kind a hack when it comes to electronics and could sure use some help with a challenge I have.

I've made a about a half dozen BYOC OD-2 pedals for friends and one has asked me to build one that will allow him to remote switch the boost and OD circuits.

I did a little searching and see that Suhr's Riot pedal has this feature.
http://www.suhr.com/suhr-guitar-pedals/riot-distortion/

Is there an assembly or so you guys know of that I could build into a pedal?

I see the Suhr advertises that they use a relay to accomplish this. From my experience, the quality of the relay makes a big difference in the tone that gets through.
I recently replaced some dry reed relays with mercury wetted ones in the stereo master section of my recording console and the difference was huge.

Possibly a better solution out there? Do you guys know of other ways to accomplish this feat?

Thanks Very Much!

I'm not familiar with that BYOC pedal, but you're talking about two separate switches, right?
I'd recommend two of the 1776 relay bypass boards (called the finish line relay) you can find here:
http://1776effects.com/store/

Then, you can run a shielded two-conductor cable from the pedal to the switches, which would give you two for switches and then the shield for ground.

Curious:  so the remote SW would allow the pedal's overdrive setting(s) to be changed, without having to turn the pot?

No
The plan is to leave the pedal's OD and Boost circuits on on and be able to switch them into the feed to the preamp section or have them bypassed.
I might have to break out the boost section on the circuit board in order to accomplish that...
