Steve Vai Chad Smith do Highway Star with Glenn Hughes
« on: March 08, 2014, 10:59:17 pm »
We heard the Satch/Sammy/Smith/Anthony version.  Check this out.  I always hated the way Hughes sang this song back in the 70's and I still hate how he did it today.  However, he is 62 freaking years old and just listen to this man freaking sing.  The guy is simply a freaking monster of nature.  I know Sammy is 66, but if anything, Glenn is singing better today than he ever has.  And unlike Sammy, Glenn made his living screaming like this.  Wow.... :worthy1:  Compare this effort with the Burn vid I posted.  Coke does bad things.....

Enough of that, now on to the guitar.  They play the Made in Japan version.  Satch played the Jon Lord parts in his version, Steve plays them in his version - even the little diddle at the beginning as the song fades in - TOOOOO COOOOL!  The organ solo sounds like a Hammond, but there is no organ or player noted in the credits.  Could it be Steve's guitar?  Brilliant!  Steve doing Ritchie?  Brilliant!

All in all another cool rendition.  The second vid is them talking about doing the song, really cool.

Here ya go Doug!

While I agree with your comments, I think I will stick with Purple's version, thank you.

Oh, I agree!  Made in Japan with Gillan (and not Hughes) screaming and Ritchie playing like nobody else is THE best live album of all time - if not the BEST album of all time.

This was a tribute album done by bands and individuals who were influenced by DP and the Machine Head album.  I think Steve Vai has a ways to go before he reaches the bottom of his creativity well!

I like to watch these tributes by the monster players so I can pick out the little details they screw up and then watch for the parts I STILL cant play!

Man, but its just FUN to play songs you love.
Doesn't matter if you are a "star" or one of the troops.
I've always had a total blast playing Aerosmith, Thin Lizzy, Skynyrd, Free and AC/DC.

And it is NOT easy to replicate parts by any other player. Especially if you are creative, which I'm not. Unless you are Jeff Beck. (No-one can do Hank Marvin except JB)

BTW, Ritchie200, the volume was up and the foot was bouncing', what more can I say?

Cheers, VB
everything will be ok
in the end.
if it's not ok,
it's not the end.

Excellent!

I love the way they put their own stamp on the original
That's what real artist do instead of note for note copying

Having said that, I like Sammy and Satch's versions better, but this is a real cool tribute, no doubt

Quote from Willie Nelson. :l2:

It is intended to be humorous, but didn't convey well.

Did not know anyone would pick-up on it.  Oh well, cant help much about the shape I am in.

Yes, I do know about the difficulty of covering someone else.  The Black Crows had a hell of a time doing it with Hard to Handle.

They did not even get close :icon_biggrin:

Please excuse me, I have a strange way of driving nails.
