Have Located an Approximately 1967 Bassman Head
« on: April 17, 2014, 11:18:18 am »
Found this in a pawn shop kinda sitting back on a shelf behind all the other stuff. It's pretty worn and I think the back-plate is missing. On the channel with the "deep switch" the blackface is worn to silver around the inputs.
I didn't test it. Just kind of marked it off because I got more amps than I know what to do with.

They had $200.00 on it and I've bought stuff there before and have always been able to talk him down. Wonder if this would be a good investment for $200. or less. I tried to delete it from my mind but it keeps coming back. Platefire

I ID'ed it from this amp on e-bay. It's just like it but a lot more used and abused.

Yes, definitely good for $200 or less unless it's completely ratted out. They go for about $500 clean, all the time. You could work on it and get a few bucks out of it or, I wouldn't be surprised if you could ebay it for $350+ as an as-is "project" in a heartbeat. If there is any way you could verify that at least the trannies are working, snag it, I say.

I've got a little 8 Ohm 6"Intercom speaker in a small wall mount cab that I use to put a load on repaired heads or combo chassis on initial fire up testing that I can take along with a speaker cord and test it. Long as you don't turn the volume up, it works fine. I noticed it has a new set of JJ Power tubes in it. It's in a town about 30 miles away. I usually make it there about once a week. When I go I will test it and possibly make an offer. If it's gone---oh well!  :dontknow: Platefire

Hi Plate, Way to stick the knife in. The best I can do is this noname head that I was willing to buy working/not working for $290.

At first glance looked to be professionally made and stamped with "ROSE MUSIC" who in the day were tied up with Marshall and then went on to make "GOLDENTONE AMPS" here in OZ.

After an investigation, its is a BITZA of local made components.
The guy I bought it off got it working and it sounded good, so the bitz are worth the $250 I paid for it.

So if I was able to pay less that $200 for a bassman I'd be there in a heart beat.  :sad2:

Hey Plate,
The normal channel is pretty much like any Fender.
Grab it before it gets away!

Yeah, just what are the odds of it still being there when i get back maybe next week?  :dontknow: I know two amp collectors in that town that would go get it right now if they knew. I will take my little speaker and cord for testing just in case. Platefire

Call the shop up and tell them to hold it for you, put a reserve on it with a CC then it's yours

Hey Plate, I would think you know I am a collector, but I am always on the lookout for 50 watt bassmans or similar fender amps that are not of collectable quality.  Like ones with the transformers changed or just over the years have had chassis drilled making them players amps.  Nothing wrong with them at all and are better finds if you intend modding one.

I found one in a homemade headbox that someone had tried to make something else out of.  Never did get it, but the chassis have loads of room and the transformers ready for a lot.  I made a single channel amp out of it and made a tube overdrive and added a 808 tube screamer.  I have it apart waiting for time to add a gibson tremolo, or at least that WAS my plan, but I forgot about the vibrato/tremolo in the Vox until Sluckey took the time to resurrect the thing.  Now I am thinking it may get one of those.

What I am saying is I like to find amps I can modify without the amp gods frowning upon me.  The Bassman is my second favorite.  First is a Super Reverb, but it has been years since I have found one of those and I don't expect to since ebay.

Anyway, if an amp is working it is hard for it not to be worth more than $200.  I found one the other day at a antique flea market.  Still don't know what it is, but I do know what a smooth plate Telefunken is and it had 3 in it.  I paid their asking price of $40 and it also had a Stancor OT on it.  Like I said, I don't even know what it is, but some of those OT are bringing $400 now.

Hey Jim, Sheee a big'n and way over kill for this amp. The more I look into it, its surplus parts to make a run of amps but nothing in the way of who the maker was.

The spec has it as 200mA with 195v, 185v and 175v for a voltage doubler rectifier,6.3v@4A and6.3v CT@3A.

:hijack1: I think this was suppose go before the blerb, sorry Plate.

I was looking at that tranny too and thinking, "Man that is a big piece of iron". TIMBO if you was paying by the pound that thing would be a Grand and the handle would have to be located right over the tranny to be balanced.  Platefire

Ed, That's kind of why I shied away from the bassman because my traditional Fender USA responsibility to God and my Country would kick in and I would feel obligated to restore it back to original. So it comes down to, do I really want to take this mission or let somebody else take the responsibility? With all the amps I got I figured I would give it a little space for somebody that may need it more than me to get it but If it hangs around to long, oh well,  I might  just have to snag it. Besides it keeps calling my name---if it would just shut up! Of course it being gone when I come it to check it out would take care of that. Platefire

Timbo,

 :hijack1:

Could it be a Phoenix amp?  Jedistar is like a wayback machine for amps!  Check this out:

http://www.jedistar.com/jedistar_amp_dating_p.htm

Also there is the Playmaster 116 that was a kit build from Electronics Australia magazine. However, scroll down to the pic of the 125.  Maybe there was a source for parts and people built them as they wanted.

Well I went to the pawn shop today and the head was gone. He said he sold it earlier in the day. Can't say I wasn't disappointed but this is what I expected all along when I didn't make a deal when I first saw it. I'm OK, I'll be alright  :sad2: :BangHead: :violent1: Platefire
