1960 Fender chassis plating
« on: April 23, 2014, 07:58:26 am »
Hi,

I have a 1960 Vibrasonic which has a steel chassis. However it looks like Aluminium as it is a dull grey colour, and has absolutely no rust on it. The metal is magnetic.
It seems to have been electroplated.

Any ideas about what it is?
Thanks

VB
everything will be ok
in the end.
if it's not ok,

Not aluminum, if a magnet will stick to it.  Aluminum is non-ferrous, and a magnet will only stick to ferrous metals.

It might be galvanized, as some chassis' are done.  The dull gray may be the oxidation of the galvanized plating, and not deep enough to cause the steel beneath to oxidize (rust).

What Jack said.
They were a little shinier when they were new,
but that's a long time back. now.
