Old Heathkit Capacitor/Resistor checker
« on: June 26, 2014, 01:26:18 am »

I think this little number is pretty darn neat!
The voltage selector wasn't working at all, and there was a few broken connections inside. Replaced a burnt out resistor and that fixed the voltage selector.
Fairly useful tool for testing/reforming questionable filter caps.
Still need to locate the Heathkit manual for it so I can use it to it's full capability.
And the cats-eye tube is just flat out cool and mesmerizing...

Some links there you'll find useful. The pdf. manual is incomplete, but at a glance it has the instructions in it. I have the C-3, which is a larger unit than yours (and older) but I like it a lot. I replaced pretty much all the caps and resistors, and it's surprisingly accurate with ohms and capacitance both. I'm not sure how much I'll actually *use* it, but it will come in handy I'm sure. It's the one that arrived in pieces with the tranny flopping around.

Lots of people snicker at the "heath-shit" stuff, but build quality is normally pretty good, as most of it was built by hobbyists who know what they were doing. I have had a few pieces that made me chuckle though. What I really like about Heathkit is, it's easily serviceable. At least the stuff I have, anyway.

John,
Thank you for the links. They will help while I fiddle with this thing.
I was excited to find it. This one is surprisingly accurate also although I haven't changed any of the old capacitors or resistors yet.
I've had personal experience with flopping transformers also. My first amp...sold on ebay to recoup some build cost...shipped with UPS (apparently fell off a conveyor belt?!)......delivered to the buyer horribly damaged (PT flop). Should have never sold it. An experience I try to forget and prevent.
Like Forrest Gump said, "it happens"

Thanks again for the links.

Peace,
Aaron

John:  Thanks for those websites.  I haven't searched for a Heathkit manual for some time; it seems the copyright dispute has made the manuals scarce online!

Also, I never used the comparator function on my Eico 950B, and hadn't realized that it could be used to measure inductance.  Great info!

I have done extensive searches and managed to find the ones I needed, except for my scope, but it's not really necessary for that.

The copyright thing doesn't affect the websites in Denmark and Russia. ;) You do have to dig sometimes.
